"He developed the stage name of Charlamagne, taken from his pseudonym as a drug dealer, "Charles," and created a new persona based on King Charlemagne, who ruled much of Western Europe as part of the Carolingian Empire in the late 700s and early 800s, whom he read about at night school. He added "Tha God" because it "sounded cool."" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlamagne_tha_God

I think it's tasteless and immature to try to capitalize on someone else's name. We should all sink or swim on our own merits.

Sincerely,

Elvis Costello

I've probably already put more thought into the name than he did.

Of course he does have us talking about it, so maybe it isn't so thoughtless after all?

And it makes a terrific reference to history that is not dead. How many people who haven't thought about it since liberation from high school and/or college now know who Charlemagne was?
