Woman apologizes after video goes viral of her calling police on black birdwatcher in Central Park

A white woman who was seen in a viral video calling the police and falsely accusing a black birdwatcher of threatening her in New York’s Central Park has apologized following the dispute over her unleashed dog. Amy Cooper offered an apology to the man, Christian Cooper, in an interview with WNBC on Monday night.

“It was unacceptable. And words are just words and I can’t undo what I did,” Amy Cooper said. “But I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man and his family. I'm not a racist. I did not mean to harm that man in any way," she said.

Christian Cooper said that around 7:30 a.m., he noticed a cocker spaniel digging in an area and asked the dog’s owner, Amy Cooper, if she would leash up her dog. There are signs posted about the leash requirements in the park. Christian Cooper began recording the incident and is heard asking the dog owner not to come close to him.

Wearing a face mask and work out leggings, Amy Cooper then responds by saying she will call the police. “I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life,” she said in the video.

She did make a call and becomes more frantic, despite the fact that Christian Cooper is several feet away and not moving any closer to her. “He is recording me and threatening myself and my dog,” she says.

She got called out on her antisocial behavior--the lack of a leash.

She overreacted. She went for the jugular with no sense of perspective and no care for the damage she was doing to an innocent human being. She was rightly ashamed, and she couldn’t stand that feeling, so she converted her shame into anger and then took out her anger on the person who made her feel shame.

This is typical behavior for a person with a Cluster B personality disorder. That’s really all it is, and it’s far more common than we want to believe.

As many as 1 in every 8 humans suffers from a Cluster B personality disorder.

some who've threatened and meant it, others who've actually done it. I agree entirely that it's not limited to racial incidents and not all about racism. Anyone who triggered her enmity might have found him or herself in very serious trouble.

And tragically many do every year. Especially boyfriends and husbands, but also (ex-)friends, coworkers, etc.

HR professionals have and share lots of stories about employees with various types of personality disorders, but cluster Bs especially:

Irrelevant if she's diagnosable: I doubt she'll ever again be employed by any business run by professionals.

My children and I have been nearly destroyed by a vengeful, mean, selfish, angry, and bitter Cluster B-disordered person. It gives me hope to know that some people who work in HR can identify and remove these monsters.

out of your lives, or at least has lost power to hurt you.

First time I learned about personality disorders I of course immediately recognized people I'd intersected in the past, though mercifully none related. I've read that over 5% are diagnosed with cluster B disorders. Over 1 in 20, so they're everywhere. And then there are all the others who have strong traits, but which don't damage their lives enough to qualify for formal diagnosis.

Of course some people are just more mean and vindictive than others. An expert in nations that self destruct into RW autocracies said the biggest clue people should look for is "mean people," and we seem to be the middle of a pandemic of meanness.

Stay well.

I don't know what the limits are of the relevant statutes, but any related to lying to the police via phone should be pursued to the utmost. She attempted to coopt the state monopoly on violence to harm someone she was mad at. She did so by falsely accusing him of something that the police generally react to with deadly force. FUCK HER.

This is typical, Cluster B behavior. Trump is an advanced case.

People who hurt animals are always suspects to me.
From the NYT today--
'Internet sleuths digging into Ms. Cooper’s life found an Instagram profile of her cocker spaniel mix and began sharing old photos documenting injuries the dog had suffered.

By nightfall, she had surrendered the dog, Henry, to the group she had adopted him from two years prior, according to a Facebook post by the group, Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue."

She intentionally counted on the systemic racism in our society and intended to make this man suffer for having the audacity to ask her to follow rules clearly posted in the park.

She wasn't going to let some uppity "colored" man tell her what to do. She told him clearly what her intention was. She was going to use the stereotype of the "scary Black man" to have police confront the man and possibly escalate a situation just because she was mad that he told her to put her dog back on it's leash.
