Iowa Republicans defend Steve King's racism even as they try to unseat him

By Associated Press -May 26, 2020 10:00 AM

Iowa Rep. Steve King faces his toughest primary yet as his House colleagues continue to bar him from committee assignments.

Rep. Steve King is fighting for his political life — but not because he's compared immigrants crossing the border illegally to cattle. His Republican opponents in next week's primary aren't raking him over the coals for making light of rape and incest. His chief rival's ads don't mention the time he wondered when the term "white supremacist" became offensive.

Instead, the nine-term congressman known for his nativist politics is fighting to prove he can still deliver for Iowa's 4th Congressional District. Since Republican leaders stripped him of his committee assignments, in a rare punishment, King has been dogged by questions over whether he's lost all effectiveness. Some longtime supporters are turning away, not because of his incendiary remarks but because they think he can no longer do the job.

"We all want to feel that we're being represented in Washington, D.C., that we have a voice," said Iowa state Sen. Annette Sweeney, a former King supporter.

Establishment Republicans in Iowa and Washington, some of whom share King's policy views and have long tolerated his provocative remarks, have largely abandoned the congressman, throwing their weight behind Randy Feenstra, a conservative state senator.

I used to see a lot of King signs up around his district...not so much anymore. There used to be a barn on Hwy 3 (I think) that had huge King signs plastered all over it all year long. Its still covered in signs, but King's is no longer there.

That man has been racist for years and nobody's seemed to mind, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up this time. I actually met him in 2013 at the DC WWII memorial during the shutdown. I confronted him over his past statements about Muslims, pointing out that one of my best friends is a Muslim and he's one of the nicest, most caring people I know. He said "well, people like your friend need to speak out about the radical elements within," and quickly ended the conversation after that. I would have loved to follow up and ask why it's my friend's responsibility to "speak out", why he is responsible for what other Muslims do? Is Congressman King responsible for everything done in the name of Christianity? I really hope you Iowans finally send this racist POS packing.

They keep voting for scumbags like this and I place 100% of the blame directly on them.
