I was standing in line, wearing a mask, the last of eight people waiting patiently for our turn to sign in and pay after answering health questions and having our temperatures taken, when a woman came up walking her dog. From about six feet away she started taunting us, saying we were "sheep" and "scared." Then she started rattling off possibly accurate, possibly bogus, statistics about deaths and the world's population in prior pandemics, concluding "this one is a third of a million deaths," as though it wasn't worth being concerned about. She began ranting about Memorial Day. She started pointing at people saying "You've lived long enough" "You've lived long enough" and talking about children. The guy in front of me said "You're an asshole, go away." She rushed around behind me and got too close to the guy in front of me (no mask of course) and said something about "believing the shit" we were hearing. Then she said "I said the 'S' word, I can do that because I have liberty." I said, "I'm about to say the 'F' word if you don't get out of here, you crazy bleep." She started screaming into my face. One more step and I'd have knocked her on her ass. She decided to go up and down the line screaming into people's faces. I got out my cell and called 911. When they answered, I said "I want to report a crazy person at the ****** swimming pool." He asked for the address, but I only knew the street. I held up my phone so the dispatcher could hear the screaming. Someone decided to crowd the lobby by letting all of us in and locking the door. I asked the woman with the keys what the address was, but the crazy lady was screaming so loud at the entrance I couldn't hear it. I handed her the phone, then I immediately said, "Oh, I shouldn't have done that." She didn't seem to care, gave the cop the address and went outside to confront the screaming old bat. A couple of minutes later a Sheriff's SUV came right across the lawn. By that time the nutcase and her dog had moved quite a distance from the entrance. Then another squad arrived. I eventually got my phone back all wiped down. After a few minutes the cops cuffed the woman and put her in one of the vehicles. Some woman who apparently knew her took the poor dog.
I swam some laps. When I was done I was told the cops wanted me to stay around to give a statement. I asked if I had time for a shower and was told I did. When I was dressed the woman in charge said the officers "had what they needed" and were "taking her in." Because they did not want a statement from me I concluded my initial impression was correct and they were taking her to a mental health facility, although the pool lady said she couldn't comment. I have to say I am a bit disappointed she missed out on a body cavity search at the jail, but agree with the decision the officers made to treat her as a nut, not a criminal. I suspect she has a long mental health history that showed up in their records.
I will feel a lot better about this two weeks from now than I do this evening. I intend to call the Sheriff tomorrow and request I be notified if that woman tests COVID-19 positive. I will remind them the pool has a sign in sheet should she be positive.

(5,170 posts)Poor dog. I am sorry you encountered so much drama to go swim some laps.
The ones I don't understand are the seemingly normal ones who don't wear a mask. The other day one of my co-workers said I had too much fear, (I took an extended leave from a very busy workplace).
Another one was a handyman who came to work around my house and I asked him if wore a mask or bandana, he said he didn't need to. I wouldn't get anywhere near him except to give him a check. I also suspended the rest of the work I had discussed. I don't need it now.

(1,137 posts)I texted a handy guy, asking if he wore masks and gloves. He said they did not have masks but gave gloves. I asked if I provided a mask, would he wear it. He said he would. He will be doing our work because of that. I am lucky enough to have extra masks, because my boyfriend was going to go back to work. Now he is staying at home! Not sure if you have extras of both, but offering could be a solution.

(5,170 posts)Masks. But really it was nonessential work, something I have put off a long time anyway.
I do have essential work I need soon, and will make it part of the job agreement,
Especially because it will be inside the house.

(175,733 posts)She'll probably get them. The fact that the cops took her in makes it likely that she'll get one.

(29,557 posts)The fact they didn't want a statement from me made it clear they were treating her as a wacko.
greatauntoftriplets
(175,733 posts)Is that because of all the wackos in Florida? Sorry, I've read too many Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen books.
rzemanfl
(29,557 posts)Before I moved here I thought Hiaasen was far fetched. Wrong. There are some great Florida books by Laurence Shames, but they are from quite a while back.

Agree about tough.

This is a stand your ground state. I would not have given knocking her on her ass a second thought, although I was worried she might land on the dog. "You've lived long enough" was enough of a threat for me to use non-lethal force IMHO. What if she had a knife or a gun? Plus there were seven witnesses to the whole thing.

(16,725 posts)It's interesting that growing up, these incidents were practically unheard of. Most people basically behaved, even if they had warped belief systems. Poor self-control usually came with a high price, in terms of social shaming, shunning, job loss, etc. Perhaps it meant more then, to actually be checked by your own self-regulation for the sake of your reputation, job, family?

Back then crazy people got locked up and weren't out on the streets. I am not saying that was a good thing, it was just the way it was.
BTW down thread there is a person who thinks I'm a heartless prick.

(29,557 posts)If something like this happens to you, I hope you show lots of sympathy. I'm sorry I don't meet your standards. I have done every goddamn thing I could to avoid the virus and this nutcase gets right in my face and screams right wing bullshit at me. I'm no saint and I admit it. It is no fun having a person tell you you've "lived long enough." Think about that. Would you like it?
Sorry I am not tolerant enough for you. You're welcome to put me on ignore.
