Trump's draft executive order targeting social media companies sparks battle inside the White House

WASHINGTON — The Trump White House has been embroiled in a vigorous internal debate over whether to issue an executive order aimed at punishing social media companies for perceived political bias, with opposition to the order coming from some of the most conservative parts of the administration.

White House sources tell Yahoo News that the office of Vice President Mike Pence, National Economic Council Chairman Larry Kudlow and others are making the argument that it will set a bad precedent to signal that the federal government can go after private companies and seek to penalize them for purely political reasons.

Even though the draft of the order that leaked to the public on Thursday would be limited in its impact, the signal it would send is the most significant thing, according to its opponents. The push comes as the coronavirus death toll in the United States has surpassed 100,000.

“There is pushback from a lot of people” inside the White House, an administration official told Yahoo News, saying there is “a lot of frustration” among advisers who are often some of the president’s most loyal backers.

aren't you?

As the FCC has no authority over cable or satellite, it would have zero effect on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc., or any other RW outlets that are on those platforms.

And don't forget, it would also apply to liberal outlets that broadcast over the public airways.

Be careful what you wish for.

My solution is to counter hate speech with counter hate speech, and we need some of our billionaires to step up and start their own stations to forcefully counter that speech.

Another tool at our disposal is to boycott, write letters, etc. those companies that advertise on the RW media platforms, take away the money from the ads and those platforms wither away.

It will take time, but if enough of us keep at it, we can win.

a cult - the solid trump support. Deprogramming a massive cult is a tall order.

A party that has no issues with blatant lies because they are getting all they want...unimaginable wealth, a stacked conservative court...

Religious hypocrisy in supporting someone counter to their teachings

A powerful right wing noise machine that successfully saturates and brainwashes.

We are in deep, deep shit.

but if we give up, then we have truly lost and we will become a 2nd Soviet Union.

I know things look dire now, but things tend to right themselves when enough people get pissed off and finally take action, hopefully within the law.

We have to win in Nov, not only the WH, but also the Senate, which is in play now, and strengthen our hold on the House.

I'm an optimist, to me, the glass is half full rather than half empty.

Don't give up or stop fighting the good fight, we CAN win this because we have the truth on our side while they have nothing more than lies, deceit, dishonor, etc on their side.

The logistics of doing it are a hellish nightmare, but it's already established that 1A does not permit yelling fire in a crowded theater. What must happen is the extension of that legal doctrine to media.

All of us here recognize that what Fox, Rush, et al have been doing the last 30 years is EXACTLY the same thing, just instead of stoking unwarranted fear of fire, it's fear of anyone who's not white, straight, christian, conservative even at the expense of their integrity, and to the extent they can get away with it, male.

Bottom line, the press MUST NOT be permitted to blatantly and willfully misrepresent objective reality, because the risks and consequences are far greater than a stampede in a crowded theater. They can in fact endanger the entire planet.

Yes you can yell fire in a crowded theater if you reasonably believe that there is a fire.

Sorry, but I can't agree with you, once you start chipping away at the 1A, it will have a snowball effect and that is unacceptable to me and millions upon millions of citizens.

If it can be used against RW outlets, then it can also be used against LW outlets.

Sure you want to go down that lane?
