John O'Donnell wrote a book, Trumped! decades ago about his experience working for and with Donald Trump during the Atlantic City era. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trumped!_(book)
O'Donnell was president and chief operating officer of the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City.
He recounted how Trump attended the funeral of one of the three executives who died in the helicopter accident in the late Eighties. Trump sat, stoneyfaced, while the brother of the deceased tried to present a eulogy without breaking down, falling apart at intervals. Trump murmured to O'Donnell, "I give that guy credit. I just couldn't do that." When O'Donnell agreed that it must be hard to give a heartfelt eulogy like that, Trump interrupted him and "corrected" him. No, Trump said, I could never stand up there and look like such an asshole.
In a compendium of the Trump family, one of the last chapters described the funeral of Trump's father, Fred. Trump used the occassion to promote his latest building projects and the fiscal health of the Trump Organization. At.his.father's.funeral.
Taking these anecdotes together, it's easy to see that Trump can't give more to detached, abstract people than he can offer to people close to him. He isn't just amoral. He's asocial and devoid of compassion. Period.
