The region was stolen from China by Great Britain in 1842, as part of the peace treaty that ended the opium war, fought by Great Britain to force the Chinese state to allow Great Britain to continue to sell opium in China.

5. So that makes it Okay? Tiananmen? China has broken its 50 year promise of relative freedom

The principle is that, upon reunification, despite the practice of socialism in mainland China, both Hong Kong and Macau, which were colonies of the UK and Portugal respectively, can retain their established system under a high degree of autonomy for up to 50 years after reunification. However, what will happen after 2047 (Hong Kong) and 2049 (Macau) has never been publicly stated.

What you wrote makes it seem that you would sacrifice the people of Hong Kong because you want to punish Great Britain.

US wants Huawei executive for trial, but is not supporting Canada much at all as two Canadians languish in rough Chinese jails with no charges under rubric of suspicion of "security violations". At the same time, Canada is suffering trade blockages.

So don't drag Canada into this until you get that part right.
