(22,451 posts)But they clearly state in the videos and on their graphics that you should NOT wear a mask unless you are taking care of a sick person.

(11,203 posts)Those guidelines are developed depending on historical and current infection and hospitalization rates as well as public behaviors.
We need to wear masks in the US. The infection/death rate in the US is starting to stabilize. Unfortunately, people in the US are less likely to social distance themselves as things reopen. We are already seeing second spikes in areas that have opened where people returned to their pre-pandemic behaviors. Wearing masks in the US offers some protection from infecting others. If everyone wears a mask, people will feel less at risk as they venture out and try to return to some normalcy. It makes sense to require masks in the US.

(11,203 posts)I would not be too upset about the WHO guidelines.

(11,203 posts)Right now I suppose I am lucky that I live in a state that requires the use of face coverings in public spaces. I don't know what I would have done these past months if I was confronted with non mask wearing non social distancing idiots while making my occasionally necessary public outings.
I just did not want people to start blaming the WHO guidelines for what these idiot Americans are choosing to do/not do. Conservatives I know wear masks. They are conservative, but not idiots.
PassingFair
(22,451 posts)But many are not wearing them, and they are everywhere (with the exceptional of Costco
)

(11,203 posts)Kidding, but seriously.
The same people that support defunding the WHO are probably the same ones thinking they have reason to gloat about the guidelines. Guidelines are just that, guidelines. In this case, pretty much the minimum one should try to do to lessen the spread of COVID-19.
Not all places throughout the world are dealing with the same infection rates, access to supplies and medical care, pre-pandemic behaviors of their citizens, etc. There is currently not a one size fits all response.

(15,359 posts)should have updated it. Then I found they were still saying no need for masks on 3/30, but nothing after that. Was it determined asymptomatic people were spreading the virus after that?

(40,435 posts)I see one part where they say a healthy person only needs to wear it when taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 but no where do i see where WHO says not to wear one.

(34,407 posts)That's why this country said people did not need to wear masks, until they managed to get some. All the hoarding, and lack of masks for first-responders, doctors and nurses, forced them to say the masks weren't needed, just washing the hands, keeping a distance, and staying at home. Is it different because the WHO is saying it, rather than the whatever?

(38,824 posts)It was part of the lie they told people out of fear that non-medical people would grab up all of the masks and leave nothing for the health care staff who needed them.
It wasn't true then (so they should never have posted them), but they have apparently didn't take them down after the recommendations changed.
