Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhite America speaks out of both sides of its mouth concerning how AFrican Americans should protest
On the one hand, we tell them that their protest must never be violent or threatening, even as death after death of members of their community occurs at the hands of white police officers., even as nothing changes and virtually nothing is done to address the issue On the other hand, when a Colin Kaepernick manages to find a peaceful way to register his protest against these deaths by respectfully kneeling during the national anthem,he is widely vilified as if he had committed high treason!
What the hell do we expect will happen?

(16,113 posts)complain about them when you don't!
That's why DUers didn't complain about the anti-lockdown protesters!

(8,392 posts)But that isn't at all what I said in my post. I was merely pointing out that it sends a mixed message to the AFrican American community when we say, "We'll listen to you so long as you are non-violent," but at the same time to villify on African American athlete's nonviolent expression of protest on the very same issue!
Also, another DU-er posted a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. that is very much on point: here

(7,499 posts)weary of lectures about doing it the right way. I understand it, sorry it happened. But the institutions don't allow it to happen the right way. And one fascist administration can dash all hope built over 40 years. I wish they were burning Jerry Jones home instead but they aren't.

(840 posts)So I have to support these violent protest or I dont support BLM? I have to support them shutting down freeways in LA so people after a long work week cant get home to their families? While Im sure they caught a few racist assholes in Their freeway shutdown most were probably people that support their cause. Im sorry I will never support violent protesters no matter the cause I may share with them.

(9,696 posts)It's not intended to catch or punish people who don't agree with the protest.
People stuck on a freeway suffer inconvenience in their lives for a while, the people protesting have suffered a lot more for a lot longer. Those people who "just want to get home after a long week" can no longer ignore the issue.

One person's inconvenience is another person's life threatening situation.
It is not the intent, it is the result.

(443 posts)People can only take so much. That is why you need great leaders like MLK or Gandhi to channel all that energy in more constructive ways. Instead the POTUS is threatening to shoot folks on twitter. Just crazy. The problem with the violence and destruction is that it allows the powers that be to crack down in the name of law and order and to marginalize the issue being protested. Not to mention you are destroying your own community. That is why passive resistance is more effective in the long run. But anger is a powerful emotion. This country is divided and messed up like I have never seen in my life. It is so damn sad
