it was a warm night, a friend had his window open (at about the sixth floor, maybe 8th). The police launched and detonated a tear gas canister canister. Not aimed at his window, but contents went spraying in his room and he had to evacuate. Detonating at 60 feet up in the air, it seems like a lot of the goop would get splattered on buildings rather than around the intended targets.

in Madison WI during Vietnam. A couple of friends of mine were grad students at UW. There was a demonstration in their neighborhood. They stood on their own front porch and watched, not participating. The cops threw tear gas canisters onto their front porch. They threw them back.

Some of the guys became quite proficient at lobbing tear gas canisters.
