(16,294 posts)Thank you for sharing this. However anecdotal it at least pushes back on the defeatist, chicken shit narrative that has been floated here by some in recent days.

He did not vote for pukes. Period.
Glad your father figured it out!

(9,109 posts)Of course my Dad was a Republican of a different era. Despite the fact that he could be emotional and vocal about politics from time to time, he made it a point to temper his views with facts, research, skepticism and reason. Admittedly he was the sort of Republican who was skeptical about the innate goodness and perfect ability of humanity and unfavorable towards expanding government and bigger bureaucracies, but he did not believe in giving knee-jerk support towards big business and the pseudo-libertarian views that permeate the Rs today.
I think he would have studied Donnies character and business dealings, then, with irritation and occasional grumbling, have voted for the church-going Methodist grandmother in 2016.
Of course his sort of Republican has been driven to near-total extinction by right-wing RINO-hunters.

Life in a shack.
For how long I do not know but after they all died, I found a bunch of old stock certificates, one for $1,000 purchased in 1928.
They lost the whole load and he never forgot about it.
I never forgot about it either because it molded my view of what a puke is and what a Democrat is.
You vote the damn ticket. That is what I grew up believing. There was no room in the house for a stinking puke. Nope. None.

(111,140 posts)only mine retired in Florida. He never watched Pox, said it was for morons, but he loved the illusion of those Federal tax cuts, even though he realized (and I wasn't too polite to point out) that every time one happened, it cost him more at the state and local levels than he'd saved.
Mine announced out of the blue in 2004 he was voting for Kerry. I was too busy trying to pick my mandible off the floor to ask why, but that was his last major vote.
Big Dummy fooled one hell of a lot of people out there who either bought the lies or thought his reality show persona was the real guy. I think most of them are realizing their mistake, whether or not they admit it to us.

(3,055 posts)I mean, the man's a pathological liar, but I have friends that are educated people who think he graduated at "the top of his class" at Wharton.
But I'm willing to bet the OP's dad is of either my generation or my dad's. Chances are he grew up believing what you heard in the media because of the Fairness Doctrine, and also because Fox News didn't exist. And while we knew politicians lied, it didn't tend to be about EVERYTHING. I'm sure at one point, Trump claimed he had a 140 IQ, and it was picked up and developed a life of it's own. Kind of like how he claimed his father's holdings as his own to get on the Fortune 500. Blatant lie, of course, but it got him on the list, and once he was there, doors opened.
This country, (and I'm 72 this month) has NEVER seen the level of depravity displayed by this blithering maniac, and we got through Nixon. But I'll bet we're all hearing a lot of the same things "in the wind" from the Republicans in our lives. They may still like his policies, and (God help us) his style, but they know our country can't take 4 more years of this. And I'm willing to bet that at 2 in the morning, when they're all alone with their thoughts, they know deep down inside that he'll kick them to the curb as fast as any of those "friends" he threw under the bus at the first sign of trouble.

(1,184 posts)Students who were members of Young Republicans in high school with whom I have been friends with on Facebook since their graduation.
One in particular has shocked the hell out of me given the vitriol of her anti-Democrat postings. Like your dad, it seemed to start with Covid and the lack of seriousness and crisis management Trump has displayed. But the events since George Floyd have crystallized her anti-Trumpism, saying that you cannot support the protests and Trump.
2020 may be Trump's annus horriblis.

(27 posts)The reason Trump is behind in polls in because there has been a shift from people over 65 years old. Many took a chance on him because they did not like Hillary but now they are literally dying because of Trumps inept response to Covid 19. Whether people like Joe Biden or not , seniors like him. He speaks their language. My mom voted for Trump last time after voting for Obama twice. I call her every night. You only get one mom and dad, just be good to them, the people who are 70 to 80 years old have gone through much more than you and I have had to go through. (probably) I think my mom might be voting for Biden. Seniors view the world differently.

(987 posts)about Trump. I said nasty things to them when he was elected. I asked them if they had all their mental faculties. I asked them if they were proud to vote for a man who bragged about assaulting women. It was a bad day.
Since then we only discuss the weather and the family. They don't watch Fox when I'm at their house, and I don't watch CNN or MSNBC when they are at my house.

(253 posts)My brother threw a glass of water at me over this (hence why we do not speak) My parents and I could not talk politics and he was absolutely dug in right up until last week. I challenged them with the fact they had daughters, granddaughters, children in cages, mocking special needs citizens, it was so bad. There is hope.

(32,579 posts)I cannot match your story because my father is no longer living. However I want to believe that my Dad, who was a lifelong Republican, would have done the same this year. He would have finally seen through all the lies and the BS. The Republican party NOW is nothing like what our Dads grew up with, it has completely gone to hell. Anyone with a lick of sense can see that.
