They are afraid of protestors breaching. SS works with night scopes and dogs don't need light.

Also protestors are much less likely to breach dark grounds or at least they will breach the grounds much more slowly if it is dark as opposed to lit.

Of course protecting protesters outside the WH should also be their main focus.
