In case you missed them, here's the Weekend TOONs - The Most Persistent Pandemic
So there was that time Captain America stormed an America First rally alongside black Resistance fighters... in 1984
TomCADem had a thread yesterday noting that Trump's sweeping claim about "Antifa" effectively made fictional star-spangled Nazi-fighter Captain America a "terrorist." One of the images he used was a panel from a 1984 issue of What If...?. I was into comics at the time and remember that issue very very well. It was the Reagan years, and RWers were letting their freak flags fly by treating patriotic symbols as their own personal property, as symbols of "us" vs "them." (Yes, that had been going on since forever, but I was at an age where I was first getting a sense of how pervasive it was.) In that environment, a comic where Captain America sides with black freedom fighters and "commies" was something of a political surprise. But then, it was 1984, so authoritarian dystopias were on a lot of minds (though not nearly enough). And, 36 years later, it remains depressingly relevant.
I was able to get some scans of key pages and did a more thorough rundown of its events in post #5 of that thread. Please take a look and say what you think.

(90,761 posts)1. Naked Trump is just so wrong. Won't someone think of
my eyes? My poor eyes. I can't unsee that. My brain is in denial. It saw dandelions in a field of green. I like dandelions.
But my eyes, they saw me running into the wall later on as payback.
