Chris Rock on "bad apple" cops (Original Post) alterfurz Jun 2020 OP
So TRUE! Airline pilots can't have a "few bad apples" that don't like to land neither can cops. uponit7771 Jun 2020 #1

things have changed since then with more surplus military weapons and tactics, and more people able to record video on cell phones so we hear about abuses more often now.

I'm black and whenever I get pulled over, I blatantly kiss their ass. Sometimes I still get the ticket, sometimes I get a "drive slower next time and have a good day." My friends rip me apart for this, and tell me to stand up for myself. Sorry, I'm not dying from the police.

I just go over the top with sweetness and ass-kissing. I've never even been told to get out of the car, but if I did it would be "No problem sir." It works on even the worst racists. They may still hate me, but they let me live.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an interesting spreadsheet showing fatal injuries per 100,00 man-hours worked. Police and Sheriff have a fatality rate of 13.7 as of the end of 2018 (these statistics were released in December of 2019 so are the latest available). By comparison farmers, ranchers and other agricultural managers has a fatality of 24.7; grounds maintenance workers had a rate of 18.6; fishers and related fishing workers had a rate of 77.4. I've listed these three just to give some context but if you look at the entire spreadsheet you will see that many occupations, some that most of us don't consider particularly dangerous like driver/sales workers and truck drivers (26.0) or airline pilots and flight engineers (58.9), have higher fatality rates than police.

Not to denigrate the dangers of police work but to argue that because of the extreme danger police work under, more than any other occupation, justifies any lapse from strict observance of the law is total BS.

Also, to give the expression its full length, "One bad apple spoils the entire barrel". Yet police forces nationwide refuse to get rid of their "bad apples" thus spoiling the entire force. Past time to end that practice.

23. Unacceptable standards set

It all comes down to your acceptable standard of conduct and excellence. Many professions with high risk, life or death, set very high standards. Generally for organizations it is thought a higher quality level is more costly, but thats not necessarily true. There are ways to mitigate costs. Examples of levels of sigma quality level, what is acceptable.

99% perfect:
20,000 lost articles if mail per hour
5,000 incorrect surgical procedures per week
2 runways over/under shot during landings at a major airport every day.
200,000 wrong drug prescriptions written each year.

99.99966% perfect:
7 lost articles of mail per hour
1.7 incorrect surgeries per week
1 runway over/under shot during landings at a major airport every five years
68 wrong drug prescriptions written each year

My advice is for police to measure and evaluate all officers performance in terms of reacting in calm manner, temper, control.. Chauvin had 18 prior complaints. Threshold of 1, determine if this is a violent, rogue, racist cop. If all 18 he passes, something wrong with evaluation system.
