the red 'tail(s?)' of the bookmark is hanging out the bottom. Assuming it is a bible that has permanent book marks he would be holding it right side up. This style bookmark is attached to the top of the spine and the user pulls the cloth marker down the page, leaving the tail hanging out the bottom.

Frankly I am FAR more concerned about the assault he ordered on a peaceful protest than if he knows which end of a book is up.
