Yes, some think they're the only true Christians and the rest won't be seeing the "pearly gates." But, the degree of separation varies by what charter (for lack of a better word) they subscribe to.

Fundamentalist Christians tend to lean more toward it's their way or the highway to hell (my apologies to AC/DC!), but others just think they'll be raptured in the end times while the non-fundamentalist will have to suffer the fallout of the anti-Christ and the apocalypse.

That's at least what I've managed to glean from my conversations with them.

You might be thinking of Pope Benedict XVI. He was conscripted into the Hitler Youth, as everyone of that age in Germany was at that time. He refused to attend meetings apparently. Later on he got conscripted into an anti aircraft corps. He did end up as a prisoner of war.
