'We tired of seeing black people getting killed': Seahawks' Wagner urges focus on protest message
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is urging people to focus on the message of peaceful protesters amid demonstrations across the nation turning to riots in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.
Speaking to reporters on a Zoom call Monday, the All-Pro linebacker stressed the need for the narrative to stay on the root of whats causing a lot of outrage across the United States, and not get so consumed on all the byproducts of what were seeing on TV and social media: the looting and fires, among other things. Wagner hopes white people will challenge themselves to work to understand black plight.
On the call, Wagner urged members of the media to play their role in driving the truth behind the protests to help the general public to see it.
I think its important, especially sitting here with you guys as the media. You guys play, I think, a pretty big role in whats going on right now because you guys play a part in the narrative, Wagner said. I feel like a lot of the focus is on the rioting and looting, the people stealing stuff. But we not talking enough about what started that. The black community is tired of seeing the same things going on and not seeing change. Were getting tired of people not being held accountable for the actions that they do; understanding that if we (black people) were in that situation, we would be held accountable. So I challenge everybody on this call to do your part and report the message of what it really is.
We tired of seeing black people getting killed.
