in response to the protests. maybe donnie or some republican leader gets up there and makes some platitudes maybe sorta pretending they figure the cop went a little bit too far. but imagine -- bear with me -- imagine a completely restrained police response, they just let the protests happen.
then no laws change, nothing really happens.
would there still be a lot of protesting after several days?
seriously, if the right wing actually wanted the protests to end, all they had to do was wait a few days. they don't want the protests to end, they want a lesson to be taught to those who complain.
big difference.
donnie and the right wing see the real crime as *black people complaining*. blacks occupy a lower level in the right-wing hierarchical worldview, and complaining about your place in the social hierarchy is a major crime in their books and must be punished.
protesting is not a crime of law. it is a crime against the hierarchical authoritarian worldview they are trying to push. they are abusing police and the military and government enforcement institutions and weaponry to impose a right-wing hierarchy on us.

(32,626 posts)and up the charges of the kneeler, it would be a different story. Instead, they have the agitators joining in to make it as bad as possible. The GOP is the instigator, the agitator, and the enemy.

They tried doing nothing (actually democratic mayors in several cities) and the results were a disaster.
See Minneapolis 1st couple nights for example. See NYC for current examples of toothless responses by mayors.

(52,196 posts)i'm imagining a world where we had some peaceful protests, then we *didn't* get bombarded with news of right-wing agitation, police abusing force, donnie bringing in the military, etc.
just some protests for a few days, then basically ignored. you know, like pretty much every other time. we protest and nothing happens and everyone moves on with their lives.
it's mixing scenarios up to look at a few places where the cities ignored the protests and yet they still got bombarded with all this crazy news, even if it was coming from other cities.
besides, i don't think any city really ignored it like i'm imagining. a democratic mayor might have tried to be peaceful, but that doesn't mean the police for handled it well. nyc, for example, there are plenty of videos of nyc police abusing force the last few days, no matter what the mayor may be saying or doing.
