Trump with a second religious photo op: Catholic, Episcopal prelates condemn

Catholic prelates, from Washington, D.C. to Washington state, on Tuesday joined the protest against President Donald Trump's use of religious sites for photo-ops, after Trump paid a visit to the St. John Paul II Shrine in Washington, D.C.

Photo-op two came just a day after Trump walked from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church, after mounted police used tear gas to clear out peaceful protestors from Lafayette Park, on orders from Attorney General William Barr.

"The Word of God is not a prop: It is meant to be lived and integrated into every aspect of human life," Seattle's Catholic Archbishop Paul Etienne said in a Twitter post.

Washington, D.C., Archbishop Wilton Gregory, America's highest ranking African American prelate, was scathing toward Trump, saying in a statement:

"I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we disagree."

Trump is a golfer, not a churchgoer. President George H.W. Bush was a Sunday regular at St. John's, sliding into a rear pew at the 8 a.m. eucharist. President Franklin D. Roosevelt often attended the church.

I would appreciate a tiny bit more focus on the pandemic, though all this extra fuel to the hate fire toward Blovius Maximus is appreciated too, just differently.

The Saint John Paul II National Shrine is a national shrine in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. It is a place of prayer for Catholics and welcomes people of all faiths. Wikipedia
