St. Paul mayor could be a future Dem. rock star

Saw Melvin Carter III, mayor of St. Paul, Minn. on Lawrence’s show He gave me that gut feeling I’ve gotten with some who eventually became significant players in the Democratic party. He told such a great story about his father, who was an African-American community police officer, walking the beat in the neighborhood where he grew up in St. Paul. Carter made the point about how police understanding the community they are working in makes all the difference in community policing. He talked about how people would call the house when he was growing up, saying they would only surrender to be arrested by his father, who would get out of bed at midnight and go make sure the arrest was done properly. Carter’s mother was a county commissioner, so he already had politics in his blood. I just found this young man to be a very impressive person in the few minutes he spoke with Lawrence on MSNBC. He has had a few missteps as mayor, but I just got this feeling he could really be something special in our party in the future. Here’s today’s Q&A with the New Yorker.
