I know that's a strange comparison, but they have some things in common.
Both came from troubled youth, though for opposite reasons. Tyson had nothing. Bush had it all.
Both had/have personal demons.
Both made poor decisions in their younger days.
Both took bad advice.
Both found ways to get into trouble.
But both also grew up in their own time. I am 100% sure Bush doesn't regret Alito, but I suspect he regrets Cheyney.
I don't want to say it's a lesson for all of us, but we should remember that people become "ready" on their own schedule. Some people like Obama, Buttigieg, and Stacey Abrams got it young. Others like Tyson and Bush took more time to develop. Bush can never take away invading the wrong country. All we can hope for any person is that they can learn and grow.

(93 posts)But the unnecessary loss of blood and treasure while he was The Decider takes him out of the good man running.
I want him to put out good statements. I want him to endorse Biden. I want him to sit home and paint.
A good man he is not.

(4,131 posts)I dont have to like or agree with his politics, but I think I trust her judgement. She has spent a lot more time with the man than I.
It seems in recent years hes really tried to redeem himself for his terrible policies and mistakes.

(93 posts)I believe MO really respected how Bush transitioned. Bush seemed to be observant of everything from national security to the Obamas children. I also think that their relationship has positive aspects for society, and they both know that.
I also know the evil Bush has ushered in as President. The death. The suffering. The torture. It goes on. A good guy he is not.
How many Iraqis are dead? How many American military died in Iraq? Authorized and excused torture. How about his response to Katrina?

W. had a secretary named Tyson who warned him about attacking Iraq. Tyson had a secretary named Bush who warned him about marrying Robin Givens...
The similarities are eerie.

My assessment is that his soul is black but he still has a soul. He is capable of empathy. He paints, he writes, he has some creativity and thus humanity.
His statement does not absolve him of his many crimes but it does reveal that there is at least some semblance of a heart there. I dont think the Obamas would give him the time of day otherwise.
Hes better than Тяцмр. Fucking waaaaay better than Тяцмр. But I wouldnt want him back and I do not miss him. I miss the idea that we couldnt do worse than him.
