Meta question about DU (complimentary, btw)

Last edited Thu Jun 4, 2020, 09:58 AM - Edit history (1)

(Mods, if this is the wrong forum, please move, and thanks.)

My question is about the usability of message boards, specifically boards which use the nested or threaded feature as DU does.

I have found DU to be THE most engaging, user-friendly discussion board I have ever used, and I have used a lot. I find the threaded comments to be very helpful in moving a conversation forward and getting into more detail about it. I like this approach because it encourages ONGOING conversations, not one-off statements.

What are your opinions about message/discussion boards and their layout? Do you agree that this format is most conducive to ongoing discussion? I realize the critique is that such nested comments can go on forever with people trying to get the last word, but overall I think this is the most effective.

I'm trying to find a message board that has a similar layout as DU with the nested comments for a project; I realize nothing off-the-shelf will be nearly as good but maybe the basics will be in place such as the nice, neat nested comments.

Thanks!

EDIT TO ADD: The project is not political and not remotely intending to have the number of members as DU and wouldn't compete in any way, shape or form...lol.

Very easy to follow discussions there. And there are plenty of subreddits for every kind of interest, hobby, or political discussion.

I find it not quite as appealing as DU, but I do like their nested comments to an original post.

... however some of the newbies and tech-challenged get confused about where to place their comment. Occasionally I see a stray comment in the wrong place, and there's no mechanism to move it to where it actually belongs. This doesn't happen often though, and most of us do figure it out after a time.

What's so great about DU is that (almost) everyone is polite and tolerant, even when they disagree with you or fail to understand your point. We have a better class of people here than almost everywhere else on the internet.
