It's bad enough the have Russia truther Matt Taibbi, but this too?
What the fuck? Nobody said anything about like Mattis, let alone worshipping him. Just because it gets a lot of attention, it doesn't make that true.
This really pisses me off, the coverage was warranted and the fact that it does not come from someone we celebrate is important too.
What the fucking fuck.
Fuck you Andy Kroll.

(7,837 posts)Mattis, Kelly et.al..they gave trump cover...where the hell were their voices when Trump was caging babies, stealing money for his detestable wall, issuing his Muslim ban...they were silent bc they agreed... only when their boss, a depraved sociopathic playground bully, took aim and fired insults at them did they resign, quit..whatever...what did Mattis say in his letter... something like find a yes-man to take my place because on this particular moronic point I don't agree with you (paraphrased)...Mattis isn't a hero for tepidly "speaking out"..he's a damn coward...

(31,261 posts)the damage that Trump is doing to the country. They have disgraced themselves, IMO.

(43,164 posts)...for their past positions, we're only shooting ourselves in the foot.
Once things go back to normal, we can go back to disagreeing with these people.
Right now's the time to build a coalition, though.
People in Parliamentary governments probably get this better than we do.

(16,616 posts)General Mattis actually did do some good while he was there. This is amply documented in Trump and his Generals by Peter Bergen. Mattis had a policy of ignoring Trump's orders, and told others to do likewise. Also, there is good backstory on Mattis in Woodward's book Fear.
Let's not toss the baby out with the bathwater.

(7,837 posts)Kristol, Schmidt and Nicole Wallace have been from the onset...Mattis and Kelly were supposed to be the grownups in the room..think about that...why would supposedly distinguished retired generals take a job essentially babysitting if they weren't in line with Trump in the first place? and yes Mattis is speaking out now...thank you very much...but can we stop praising him for doing the right thing?

there's another 'fuck Moore, fuck Mattis, fuck Kornacki, fuck Wilson, fuck Taibbi, fuck Sykes, fuck AOC, fuck Scaramucci, fuck Bernie, fuck Romney, fuck...".
At this rate all we're going to be left agreeing to like (until we're not) is Joy Reid - all of the people that we are turning our noses up at hate Trump as much as we do and want him gone. They also have power and/or influence (we have our votes but not much more) - Mattis is revered by the Marines and the military in general, and when he or Kelly speak out it gets A LOT of notice.
Holding everyone up to purity tests at this point is extremely counterproductive in my opinion if the goal is to get Trump as far away from the White House as possible.

(31,261 posts)I suspect that is the case now. Even recently it has done insightful journalism that we can't get for other media outside of the Washington Post and the Atlantic.

(82,849 posts)It's heartening to see some Republicans and conservatives have reached their limit with this administration. While their pasts do not cut any ice with me, their voices may carry some weight and credibility with other conservatives. I decline to get invested in the conversion experiences of folks like Gen. Mattis, but I hope their words have an influence on others who still carry Trump's banner. The United States will continue to be sickened by the poisonous policies of this administration until it is fully out of the corridors of power.

(25,449 posts)If someone has been a Republican, it doesn't matter what they do now, they are bad. Everything is good or bad. Moral/pure or evil/corrupt. So encouraging a Republican who hates Trump is "worship." Why incremental progress is a big sin. And if you correct the same sort of person on disinformation or conspiracy theories they're repeating about Democrats, they reply, "Why do you think (Democrat's name) is perfect?"
And the rule of always assigning bad motivations to Democrats. That they are incapable of using Trump's enemies to accomplish a Democratic victory this year without being compromised, they'll mindlessly let themselves be influenced, "dragged to the right" or turn into Republicans or whatever.
It only helps Republicans.
