Over 1,000 coronavirus deaths reported in the past 24 hours. Officials fear protests will drive up numbers
Any uncertainty about venturing out during the coronavirus pandemic has been seemingly put aside by many to protest police brutality after watching video of George Floyd fatally pinned under an officer's knee in Minneapolis.
Protesters, often without masks, have shouted Floyd's name. And during arrests, police have loaded them into vehicles and holding cells, making it difficult to social distance.
Despite the sudden shift, coronavirus is still spreading. Since Sunday, 4,430 deaths in the US have been reported. Of those, 1,036 deaths were between Thursday morning and the same time Friday.

(25,242 posts)He will claim it's not his fault but the blame of the people that were out all over the country without masks and not social distancing. So any deaths over 100,000 will not be his fault. That will be his new story.
He won't and his Administration will not attribute any deaths to the rush to re-open the country for the economy.
Actually - this murder of George Floyd in MN is a godsend for him. He's always looking to have someone or something else shoulder the blame for his incompetence. This is right up his alley.

(6,930 posts)I wanted to get my usual summer kiddie pool for my dogs and went over to the local WalMart. The parking lot was PACKED. I have never seen it that crowded that I can remember. I never even parked, found an uncrowned dollar general, got the pool and left. I could not believe the crowds at Walmart.

(205,256 posts)It closes early, so everytime I've passed by in the few times I've been out, the parking lot is packed all the way out to the road, even busier than before the pandemic. Granted, fewer stores are open here in New York, mainly groceries and gas stations/convenience stores, and though there's been much less traffic, it's been like that every single time I've driven by.

(34,066 posts)(rolling 7-day average between 945 and 1190) Down from between 1200 and 1800 in the two preceding weeks.
I am concerned about cases skyrocketing because of the combination of opening up and the protests. New cases are on the rise again, on average (daily average this week of 22,590 this week, as opposed to 21,500 last week). But as to deaths (a lagging indicator), 1000 is lower than it has been, not higher.
