Feds arrest trio of 'Boogaloo Bois' planning to lob Molotov cocktails at Vegas protest crowd

Three “Boogaloo Bois” had big plans for Saturday in Las Vegas. They stopped off at a gas station en route to an anti-police protest over the death of George Floyd, and filled up a gas can. They had begun making the Molotov cocktails they intended to launch into the crowd of protesters when they suddenly found themselves surrounded and arrested.

The men, all with military backgrounds and a devotion to far-right “Boogaloo” memes, were charged Wednesday by federal authorities with plotting to attack the protest in order to further their hope for a civil/race war, Nevada U.S. Attorney Nicholas Trutanich announced.

“Violent instigators have hijacked peaceful protests and demonstrations across the country, including Nevada, exploiting the real and legitimate outrage over Mr. Floyd’s death for their own radical agendas,” Trutanich said. “Law enforcement is focused on keeping violence and destruction from interfering with free public expression and threatening lives.”

The men—Stephen T. Parshall, 35, a former Navy enlistee; Andrew T. Lynam Jr., 23, an Army reservist; and William L. Loomis, 40, a former Air Force enlistee—are being held on $1 million bond each in the Clark County jail, according to court records. Parshall and Loomis are from Las Vegas while Lynam hails from suburban Henderson.

“The complaint shows that Facebook’s failure to disrupt the Boogaloo groups allowed members to continue planning and developing new tactics, including bomb-making strategies spelled out in a 133-page manifesto still being circulated on Facebook today,” the report observes.

I guess Mark Zuckaberg is a BoogalooBoys, otherwise he WOULD DO something about these terrorist groups promoting physical violence against American citizens.

The view that people that come in contact with speech will sort things out. It is a blind viewpoint in this modern world where small groups can hide online in broad daylight.

It is good to see that at least some people in the Justice Department and FBI are giving supremacist groups the attention that those groups don't want. Supremacists operate in darkness, aided by adherence to a blind ideology of the type Zuckerberg is trafficking. It takes conscientious law enforcement to disrupt that threat to all of society.

Can Aiding be considered a crime without abetting?

I mean providing a platform to publish a 133-page manifesto with bomb-making strategies spelled out and circulating on Facebook should be illegal. No?

To him, nothing is bad speech because online users will sort it out if exposed to it. Such thinking is dangerous libertarian bullshit.

There has always been a prominent strain of anti-intellectualism in America, the problem is that social media, with it's rapidity of transfer of both facts and lies makes figuring out what is true difficult, even for normally informed people - have you done a search for information online? What you are hit with is a barrage of text, and depending on the issue, a lot of that text is opinion or outright lies and for some of that, if you don't read thoroughly, you can't distinguish it from facts.

on his truck being out. I told him to just google the model of his truck and put in oil pressure sensor. He told me he can not do those sort of things. I am 72, I grew up with card catalogs. If you wanted to know anything you went to the library and looked through the card catalog. People do not know how to research, thus they don't know how to think. Someone else has to do that for them.

alone are not illegal in print so I'm not sure they would be illegal online. Combine it with the manifesto and especially the arrest and maybe, but I don't know how that would hold up -- freedom of speech and association are strong defenses for anyone not involved in this specific plot I think.

I’ve been to FB headquarters many, many times. I have friends who work there (now from home). An ex works there.

FB gets thousands upon thousands of alerts per day. They have staff specifically set up to deal with it. A rather large staff.

But the alerts are a flood. You demand they find a floating stick in a swollen Mississippi. Sometimes they catch it right away. Sometimes not. And if not, everyone goes full Karen. “Zuckerberg!!!!!!”

Lay off a bit. They’re overwhelmed. And they see a lot of things you do not. Awful things. Not just your personal bugaboo of the day. I’ve personally seen the alert system. It’s not an easy job at all.

Should there be more people staffed? No doubt. And the internal culture is about 95% anti-Trump. Have you ever seen a pic of FB staff? It’s not bros, and it’s definitely not bro culture.

This all reeks of “Why doesn’t the world work the way I want it to work, right now, the moment I demand it?!”

Chill, K’s.

Wearing their uniform Hawaiian shirts. Sheriff is saying they were first to start breaking windows, and then left when things got violent between police and demonstrators.
Sheriff, who is white but gets major support from the black community, is viewing press and security camera videos and promises additional arrests.

A number of us have reported it and we get a message back almost right away that is doesn't go against their standards. In this group they have threatened our mayor because she closed the town to help stop the virus. We have to start policing these people online.
