(32,626 posts)so much now, brings me back to so much then
I had three good friends in grade school with something unique in common. Each of us liked a different Beatle. We had a Mrs. Lennon, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Starkey, and I was Mrs. McCartney.
I suspect Paul had a lot of wives out there!

(25,816 posts)Many of the early Beatles recordings were covers of songs written and recorded by black artists.

(25,816 posts)But most of the old rock is like you say, covers and white versions of blues stuff.
Like 'Hound Dog' by Elvis is a cover of Big Mama Thornton I first got into the blues
because I looked at the artists named as writers. Very much of the early Stones stuff was
old blues covers. I thought "who is this Willie Dixon guy?", did some research about 1967, and discovered a new world of music.
I followed the blues down to the Delta and made many more discoveries.
Paul McCartney is surely aware of rock's origins.

(14,012 posts)I love a lot of rock 'n' roll and rock, but I'm likelier to be listening to Skip James or Otis Redding than to the lads from Liverpool.
I'm a listener, you're a musician - but I suspect we have a lot of common background.
I have a bag of Hohner blues harps awaiting my retirement next year. I'm going to learn to blow like Big Walter Horton if it kills me.

(13 posts)(as they have declared openly forever..) was to bring American Blues to the people
of England. That's all they were hoping to do...Worked out for them nicely, I'd
say. Also recall them saying they would call it quits when they turned 50! Let's

(24,365 posts)of this bit of history.
Interesting.
One thing I hope Mr. McCartney can come to understand is that in large part, the protests are not exclusively about racism, as much as they are about the way the police conduct themselves, and for well over a century have been immune to accountability and oversight.
WE NEED A SYSTEM FOR POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY

(9,685 posts)Yay for them doing the right thing over 55 years ago, but where is he with his massive fortune, doing anything about systemic racism by contributing to vital services and charities that combat violence against black communities? Where were his concerts on this issue. Yet another celeb who is jumping on a bandwagon. If he thought it shit nearly 60 years ago, and he clearly did, how did he build on that? Not by much IMO, Dennis I love you but this old man just wants to be talked about right now. He is not an ally in any real sense of the word, certainly not in the last 40 years after desegregation became a thing.

(7,722 posts)Talk about getting him wrong. How do you know what charities contributed to or what he's done with his money? I've been reading up on McCartney and following his career closely since I was a teenager in the 70s. He's always been on American's side. He doesn't need to do anything to be "talked about" LOL he's a fucking Beatle. How old are you?
Soph0571
(9,685 posts)I am from the UK. Beatles yay and all that, but the point still stands... it is easy to write an Instagram post - I am not aware of his spending some of his many millions on anti-racist campaigns. If I am wrong please let me know. The expectation of being anti-racist moved on since boomer.
Sugarcoated
(7,722 posts)tail end of the boomer babies...I feel lucky to be able to remember the 60s, magical time. Anyways, McCartney isn't miserly with his money:
