Kayla has spent her legal career representing Arkansans. Its who she is an advocate.
As an attorney and a small business owner, Kayla has gained unique insight into how everyday Arkansans are affected by actions at the state legislative level. After spending her legal career representing Arkansans, Kayla wants to represent the people of District 39 in the state House of Representatives.
Kayla is running for State Representative so that families in District 39 have a leader who listens to them and is on their side. Kayla wants to put her knowledge and experience to work for District 39 on issues like access to affordable health care, public education, economic development, womens equality, and criminal justice reform.
Kayla was born in North Little Rock and grew up in Sheridan. Her father is a disabled U.S. Army veteran who later became a small business owner. Kaylas mother spent her career working in public school districts.
Kayla earned a bachelors degree in English from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, graduating in three years on a full academic scholarship. While at ASU, she earned a scholarship to compete on the ASU Debate Team.
Kayla earned a law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law. Elected to the Honor Council in her first year at the law school, she was appointed as Chief Justice of the Honors Council during her third year.
Upon passing the state bar exam, she joined the Taylor & Taylor Law Firm in Little Rock and worked on a variety of cases.
In 2013, she started her own law firm, The Applegate Firm in Maumelle, with her husband, Ryan, who is also an attorney. Kaylas honors and awards include being named a Mid-South Super Lawyers Rising Star for three consecutive years. In 2016, Kayla was recognized in Little Rock Soirée Best Lawyers Business Litigation.
Currently, Kayla is an attorney with James, House, Downing & Lueken, PA. She has a diverse practice handling cases in such areas as divorce/custody litigation, civil and commercial business litigation.
Kaylas memberships include: Arkansas Bar Association; Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association; National Trial Lawyers Association; Pulaski County Bar Association; Judge Henry Woods American Inn of Court; American Civil Liberties Union; Arkansas Association of Women Lawyers; and Central Arkansas Velo.
Kayla and her husband, Ryan, live in Maumelle with their two dogs, Banjo and Bella. They have been married 7 years, and when they are not advocating for their clients, they enjoy traveling, hiking, cycling, golfing, and cooking together.
