I haven't looked up the statistics, but it wouldn't surprise me if Republicans have pushed for more police over the years... just like our insane military expenditures.

The military and police are really all that some wealthy people care about. Well, that and a government to enforce contracts and their property rights. They don't need much else, since they've got money for healthcare and other things that generate feelings of insecurity among others.
