When my son got his license and drove away on his own for the first time, I realized...

I'm scared for his life.

I realized that this is what many parents fear when their kids leave home for kindergarten.

Yes. I'm white. It hurts to realize what other parents go through.

This is America.

We will only be great when all parents have to wait until their kids drive off on their own to be scared like this.

We live in a prominately white community. Although my 20 son has his own car, he and his white friend seem they have an understanding they when they drive somewhere together his white friends always drive

I cried...they were leaving me behind..until it occurred to me the minute they started to crawl as infants they had left me behind...I think about black mothers who live in fear every time their child leaves the house...very different worry when you're black
