Broncos' John Elway 'not going to stay on the sidelines' in fight vs. inequality

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway said Friday he's "not going to stay on the sidelines" during the fight against racial injustice.

Elway, 59, who led the franchise to a pair of Super Bowl titles during his playing career, posted a statement on Twitter after conversations with members of the Broncos organization.

He noted his discussions over the past week changed his perspective.

"I always thought that since I grew up in a locker room, I knew everything there was to know about understanding teammates from different backgrounds and walks of life," he wrote. "What I've realized is that I could not have been more wrong."

It did take a lot of bravery on his part, given the politics of many of his fans.

If he ever wanted to start a collection of misspelled death threats, now's his chance.

healthcare when we were trying to pass Colorado care? Elway who doesn't want fracking regulated? Yeah I'm sure little rich boy has seen the light. He must be worried that black athletes might not be wanting to play for his team

He made the decision to take a stand - and I know it'll mean a barrage of misspelled deaths threats from many of his (now former) fans.

That takes guts.

Sorry. I'm a Coloradoan through and through, but this is just Elway "Johnny come lately" saying ME TOO, ME TOO.

If he puts any meaningful action behind those words, I might reconsider.

If he still endorses Orange Amin - after everything that's happened - then he can go jump off a cliff.

Fangio said the other day that there isn't racial discrimination in the NFL and then had to backtrack because so many players were pissed off and told him about it. And Elway is going along with the company line of the NFL.

Some owners, coaches, and GMs have been really proactive, but not the group in Denver.
