Man loses hand to homemade bomb, wanted to target 'hot cheerleaders'

ABINGDON, Va. (AP) — A southwest Virginia man who blew off his hand in an apparent explosives accident has been charged in federal court after authorities say they found evidence he was making a bomb and wanted to target “hot cheerleaders” because of his sexual frustrations.

An FBI affidavit filed Friday in federal court in Abingdon says 23-year-old Cole Carini of Richlands showed up at a hospital Wednesday with one hand blown off, fingers blown off his second and other shrapnel wounds.

He told authorities he’d been in a lawnmower accident. But authorities searched his property, and found explosives materials, rusty nails, pipes and pieces of flesh. They also found parts of a scorched letter that referenced tension “as he now approached the stage of hot cheerleaders” and “I will not be afraid of the consequences no matter what I will be heroic I will make a statement like Elliott Rodgers.”

Elliott Rodger killed himself in 2014 after killing six others, including two women outside a sorority house near Santa Barbara, Caifornia, leaving behind a manifesto that has been a rallying point for the online “incel” community. Incels, a shorthand phrase for “involuntarily celibate,” justify violence against women as revenge for men who are rejected as sexual partners.

Cryptic letter describes mall violence

When the FBI Bristol responded to the request for assistance at Holy Road, the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police informed the FBI "that Carini was known to them as being someone who had previously made explosive devices and had been on probation for explosives violations up until September 2019," according to the complaint.

As the investigation continued, a crumpled letter was found on the ground outside a shed on Carini's property, according to the criminal complaint. Some parts of the letter had been ripped away or could not be read.

Part of the letter read, "He casually walked through the shopping mall, his jacket concealed deadly objects. He was doing it and was assured it must be done. Even if he died this statement was worth it! He had...of tension that would come and go as he now approached the stage of hot cheerleaders. He blended in with the audience, he began scanning his surroundings. He noticed his two security guards who were standing side by side! This was an important observation."

"A dead seriousness sank in as he realized that he was truly passing the point of no return!" according to the letter quoted in the criminal complaint. "He decided I will not back down I will not be afraid of the consequences no matter what I will be heroic I will make a statement like Elliot Rodgers did he thought to himself."

I read Rogers' "manifesto" on the day of his rampage. It was supposed to be the tale of how he came to his so-called "views", but it was a nonstop pathetic whine. Whenever he was gently nudged outside his comfort zone, like being told to go play with the kids down the street of finding out the family was going on a trip overseas to visit relatives, he completely lost his shit and threw tantrums. Predictably, he served these up as injustices done to him.

that incels are a faction of the alt-right. They are big fans of an increased patriarchal society to put it mildly. They favor things like forced marriage, legalization of rape, revocation of most female rights, etc. Many of them argue that the government should provide them wives (virgin wives to be exact). Many of them advocate for lowering the legal age to consent to ~12 so that they can take child brides. Themes of misogyny, geneticism, racism, classism, and fascism in their ideologies.

I've actually spent a lot of time reading through their most popular message boards because I think they are a significant threat to public safety. They idolize violence, particularly violence against women. Honestly I think these guys are much more likely to be responsible for any significant acts of violence as opposed to neo-nazis, sovereign citizens, or militia movement types.
