Why do some British people not like Donald Trump? Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:
A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trumps limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

(2,023 posts)One thing in particular that I'd like to call attention to that the writer did not include in his long list of desirable attributes that the orange thing does not possess: He has no humor. In three and a half years, I cannot think of a single time when I have seen that arrogant con man smile or laugh. I suppose you could call it a "smile" when he shows his shit-eating grin at one of his rallies while soaking up the adulation of his brain-dead cult followers. But that grin is always completely mirthless, humorless. I'm talking about a REAL smile, or laugh. There hasn't been one from the president, not since Obama.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing not once, ever. I dont say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, its a fact. He doesnt even seem to understand what a joke is his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

(9,694 posts)honestly forget the line but he mentioned his rather large ears, he mentioned the "rivalry" with PM Trudeau and the trophy. All delivered with perfect comedic timing and appreciated by the Brits accordingly. It was genuine and a little self deprecating. Loved that speech and will now go to look for it.
