If he is facing a sound defeat, chickenshit trump may drop out

Faced with certain defeat, say in early October, and the polls show him losing badly trump has three options

He might try to stop the election on the pretext of some emergency, resurgent covid pandemic, mail in ballot fraud, or starting a nuclear war. Of course he can’t postpone the election on his own as many point out repeatedly that elections are run by the states. But if he could persuade or threaten enough republicans run states to postpone their elections he could assure Biden couldn’t get enough electoral college votes from the Democratic states to get to 270. This seems like a long shot. But plausible.

Or

He could do nothing prior to the election and try to fight the results in court and in the streets. He could incite his MAGA “army” of gun nuts to swarm to DC to protect him and kill any opposing protestors. This seems likely but is doomed to fail. The upper brass of the Pentagon has already told him this week that he’s not using their troops to kill Americans and his MAGA horde isn’t going to fight the army who mobilizes to remove him from power. Unless it is agonizingly close SCOTUS won’t save him either.

Or

He may drop out. He can’t face LOSING but may try to save face and come up with some medical excuse and say “I’m having heart trouble and I’m dropping out.” This would fit his pattern of being a chickenshit and coward. The last thing on earth he could accept is losing. If he knows he’s going to lose in November and can’t strong arm his way to stay in power he is most likely to cut and run.

He may just bail on the Republican Party 4 weeks before the election.

You heard it here first.

The only problem with his dropping out is he still needs to get outta Dodge because of those delicious indictments waiting for him as soon as he leaves the White House. He knows they all have teeth and he won't have Billy Barr fixing things for him. Whether he loses or he drops out, he will need to get away or face the first serious consequences he has ever had to deal with in his life.

It's all very scary for us.

And yet, I look forward to the day when his miserable fraudulent life catches up with him.

Could be sooner, much sooner. He will walk away and leave this mess in Pence's lap.

ETA: It's disheartening to see so many in this thread who are assuming a "business-as-usual" backdrop to this prediction and our near-term future. I foresee massive disruption to our country from covid19, exacerbated by the critical delay in response, which has pivoted us from potential containment to merely mitigation. Disruption is a huge key factor.

He has a lot more at stake than ego.

There are many lawsuits ready to go in January after he loses the protection of the presidency. Many are criminal felonies and could result in jail time.

If he remains president the statute of limitations will be exceeded by the time he leaves office so the cases will be dropped.

He's going to fight tooth and nail to remain president.
He will use every trick his minions can think up, legal and illegal, to confuse and obfuscate the election results.

1) As you point out, he can’t cancel what are State elections; but neither can he block Biden by getting Republican States to change the rules, because those States doh’t matter. He could try to block voting in Republican States that Biden wants to EXPAND to, but if Biden holds Clinton’s States, all he needs are PA, MI and WI...which now have Democratic Governors.

2) Sorry, but conspiracy theories like this are both meaningless and inconsequential. For everyone challenging police violence, consider how powerful police forces and National Guard troops are. Even a Republican state wouldn’t let Trump supporters run rampant.

3) for Trump to drop out, he would have to accept the reality of his losing, which is inconsistent with his narcissism, and be willing to claim that he was “weak” in some way. Won’t happen.
