Can someone explain how a book can be #1 without people really buying it?

I remember why Trump Jr's book came out someone explained how they could tell that the copies are bought in bulk. Plus this book by Candace Owens is #1 and isn't out until Sept. 2020

that some Republican organization purchased a ton of them to give away to donors. Most of the books end up in the trash, but it works to push it up into the "Best Seller" category. Probably the same deal with Candace Owens. And maybe Caribou Barbie back in the day. If I see them on the pile at Costco, I always turn them over or cover them up with another book.

For instance, the Candace Owens book that you cite can be pre-ordered on Amazon. It's somewhat amazing to me that a book that is not yet available to be read would be bought more than any book that is currently available for reading; but it may be common that right-wing books are bought by far more people than actually read them.

For "distribution" to their members but mainly they wind up sitting in a warehouse.

Conservative groups have this down to an art. Some bestseller lists will mark these books with an asterik.

Basically, Candace Owens has a backer, a wealthy person or group who is pre-ordering her book in bulk. This backer has decided to promote the career of Candace Owens by subsidizing her book sales. The books may be distributed at RW events, given away as "bonuses" for contributors, or given out as teaching material at seminars.
