Brevard Police Union Runs Facebook Ads Specifically Recruiting Arrested/Disciplined Police Officers Nationwide
By Lillian M. Hernández Caraballo -
June 8, 2020
In a show of solidarity, the Brevard County chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police posted a call to their Facebook page on Saturday offering to hire the officers in Buffalo, New York, and Atlanta involved in or in support of a recent streak of high-profile cases of police brutality.
The F.O.P. is the worlds largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 330,000 members in more than 2,200 union-like labor and fraternal lodges that offer full-service member representation.
The post, made at 1:21 a.m., said, Hey Buffalo 57
and Atlanta 6
we are hiring in Florida. Lower taxes, no spineless leadership, or dumb mayors rambling on at press conferences
Plus
we got your back! #lawandorderFlorida #movetowhereyouare.
The Brevard County F.O.P. seemed to directly address the 57 police officers who willfully resigned their duties in Buffalo, New York, as a show of solidarity after two of their peers were suspended and charged for the violent shoving of a 75-year-old unarmed, peaceful man on Thursday at a rally protesting police brutality. On the video, victim Martin Gugino is seen calmly approaching the officers, when they yelled at him to get out of the way, then pushed him to the ground. Gugino laid unconscious and bleeding profusely, as several other officers stepped over him and continued walking without administering aid.
The post also called out to the six ex-police officers in Atlanta who were charged for violently arresting, assaulting, and tasing two unarmed college students, Taniyah Pilgrim and Messiah Young, on May 29. Pilgrim and Young were not protesting that evening; the officers chased them, smashed their car windows, dragged them out, and assaulted them, breaking Youngs wrist, and tasing him for hours.

(18,770 posts)No idea about what.
A scenario that is increasing in plausibility is one where Trump recruits / utilizes bad police officers into some sort of paramilitary force (either under Barr's DoJ or another shadow org run by Trump himself).
Another thing to watch is whether the "Green Zoning" of the WH is dismantled or not when the protests recede. If not, it means they're girding for November, when Trump loses the election.
Vigilance.

(13,957 posts)I haven't forgotten his ridicule of those who would protect the heads of arrestees while putting them into police cars... "please, don't be too nice."
Edited to add: Or the smiling, clapping cops behind him in the audience.

Is there any decent police union out there or are all of them like a corrupt mob sending out their thugs to brutalize the people who they are supposed to serve and protect?

"The Brevard County Fraternal Order of Police currently has over 600 full time members, which consist of police officers, sheriffs deputies, and other law enforcement officers within Brevard County. Though we are a fraternal, non-profit organization, contributions are not tax-deductible. I trust you will deem the many endeavors and challenges we face worthy of your continued investment. Support from concerned citizens such as yourself are crucial in our fight for superior law enforcement and safe, protected communities here in Brevard County."
I'd like to see the response of local leaders throughout Brevard County to this disgusting ad.

A Brevard chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police posted a now deleted advertisement over the weekend calling on those officers involved in violent incidents in Buffalo, NY and Atlanta, GA, to join the ranks of local police agencies, drawing howls of outrage from citizens across Florida.
"Hey Buffalo 57... and Atlanta 6... we are hiring in Florida. Lower taxes, no spineless leadership, or dumb mayors rambling on at press conferences... Plus... we got your back! #lawandorderFlorida," reads the June 6 post made at 1:21 a.m on the Brevard County F.O.P. Facebook page. The post, deleted sometime Monday morning garnered over 2,000 comment and 1,000 shares.
The Fraternal Order of Police is the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the country, representing some 300,000 members across some 2,000 local "lodges." Critics say the organization is a major obstacle to policing reform through their advocacy and deep ties to police unions.
The President of the Brevard County lodge acknowledged that the post was legitimate and defended its recruiting efforts as well as the actions of the Buffalo and Atlanta police officers involved in the widely condemned incidents. Some of those officers have been arrested and face criminal charges.

(3,334 posts)The Civil Service board's examiner and 2 police officers, usually a captain and a lieutenant, interview all prospective applicants. My husband was the chief examiner on the board of one Florida city. Even though he was only 1 of 3 doing the interviews, he did give 0s to some which made it impossible for them to make the list. He gave, in writing, his reasons to human resources even though no one could change his vote. He was hired, at no pay, by the mayor and the city council. He did have to take an oath of office. Of course, there can be problems even with that, but it is probably the best way to hire LEOs.

(128,372 posts)It's the FOP putting a megaphone on their dog whistle to let corrupt cops know that the county is "recruiting" and that they can "apply" for jobs there, with assurances that the FOP will fight tooth and nail for them should they decide to give it try.
It's called "the good old boys club".
The FOPs (and notably even here in Philly - FOP Lodge 5) are the "NRA"s of the cities, with almost unlimited resources and power to make or break a locality's elected officials and governmental structure whenever the term "police reform" is even uttered. They need to be "hoist on their own petard" as the saying goes, for once and for all.

(128,372 posts)the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing that had been created by E.O. by President Obama in 2014 following the Ferguson, MO unrest after the death of Michael Brown.
The final report in 2015 is here - https://cops.usdoj.gov/pdf/taskforce/taskforce_finalreport.pdf
Aside from lots of so and so "should do this"s and so and so "should do that"s, there was money set aside for body cameras and that's probably about the only thing that came out of it. The problem even with that is the selective "use" of them by cops (deciding when to turn on or off). The FOP has pretty much blocked everything else.
