(11,736 posts)It is good that he was removed, but he is still the chief of the volunteer fire fighters. His apology was the typical lame ass non-apology. "I didn't mean to offend anyone"? Well what do you think your stupid little t-shirt was communicating?
Protest on the sidewalk only, and quietly so as not to inconvenience anyone? And, "All lives matter"? Why don't you go for the trifecta and talk about how Floyd had a criminal record or "why aren't we talking about Black on Black crime?"

(32,626 posts)I didn't know this description of the non-apology-apology, but saw it the other day.

(51,282 posts)Why is that not a part of the discussion?
One of the officers charged in George Floyd's killing was hired despite having a criminal record and slew of traffic violations
While the online court database doesnt include the incident reports behind the criminal complaints, it does indicate the nature of the charges and their results.
Four of the charges were related to traffic violations, including speeding and obstructing traffic. Two were parking-metre violations.
In several instances, Lane also faced criminal charges.
In October 2001, when Lane was 18, he was charged with two counts of obstructing legal process, damaging property, unlawful assembly, and disorderly conduct. He was convicted of one count of obstructing legal process and one charge of damaging property.
Almost six years later, in March 2007, Lane faced misdemeanour charges of hosting a noisy party or gathering and disorderly conduct. He was found guilty of the noisy-gathering charge.
In Lanes application to be a police cadet, sections that included his criminal and traffic history, as well as whether he had been fired from any jobs, were redacted.

(58,785 posts)going with the rest of the crowd and not thinking things through? Hell, even not thinking at all if no one else seems to feel it's needed? Especially in small towns where chatting about the news always includes wondering what's wrong with all those people "out there."
This reminds me that too-strong RWers were called reactionaries long before science discovered conservative brains sent new information for emotional reaction first, before sending it on for cognitive evaluation. Should they still be inclined.

(13,593 posts)He obviously thinks it's "funny" and I guess it is in an adolescent way. But he's an adult. Why do these adults get stuck in their adolescence like this? Are they adopting their values from media stereotypes like Al Bundy? (As you can tell by my dated reference, I've given up watching any television programs a long time ago when it all became the same as ... well, Al Bundy!)

(14,490 posts)People aren't usually this smug about being an asshole unless it's ingrained from their youth:

Without knowing the conditions of his position on that commission, I'm not convinced this is much of a smackdown. For a volunteer fire chief, sometimes those aren't much more than honorary, perhaps with a stipend and expenses paid for meetings.

(14,490 posts)Regardless, that's against the fireman's creed and he should be removed from the service. Unfortunately, none of these disciplinary actions will remove the core racism and in fact probably just hardens them.
Check out how the demographics have changed in just 10 years (from Wikipedia on Gilmer County, WV):
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,160 people, 2,768 households, and 1,862 families living in the county. The population density was 21 people per square mile. There were 3,621 housing units at an average density of 11 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.33% White, 0.91% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.57% Asian.... 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 8,693 people, 2,753 households, and 1,806 families living in the county. The population density was 25.7 inhabitants per square mile. There were 3,448 housing units at an average density of 10.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 82.5% white, 12.3% black or African American, 0.5% American Indian, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific islander, 2.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 5.7% of the population.
So, in ten years it goes from under 3% non-white to over 17% non-white.
No excuse for it but that may explain much of the resentment. Likely overheard: "Them blacks and feriners are moving in to take us over".
There's an interesting read on this event here: https://www.weirtondailytimes.com/news/local-news/2020/06/photo-leads-to-removal/

(70,501 posts)Governor Jim Justice confirmed that he has removed Martin Hess from the West Virginia State Fire Commission after he became aware of multiple social media posts on his profile.
One such post includes an image of a blood splattered truck with the caption "Just drove through Minneapolis, didn't see any protesters," reported WOWK.
snip
Hess later issued an apology on his Facebook page.
"Due to my post I have upset a lot of people and I am sorry for that by all means I did not mean [to upset] anyone," Hess wrote. "A peaceful protest is fine as long as no one gets hurt we need to remember that all lives matter we are all the same color in god's eyes so I guess all I can do is say I am sorry and did not mean any disrespect to anyone or any group."

(65,006 posts)Given the message on those shirts, one would only wear them to offend.
He knew what he was doing.
crickets
(25,963 posts)Use the word 'if' right after 'sorry' [in this case he managed to avoid it; I credit his lawyers] and immediately pivot to talk about the feelings of the person/s wronged rather than take responsibility for the action that made the apology necessary. This guy doubles down by almost blaming protestors for the shirt being made, as though it was really a necessary public service message after all, dontcha know. Make 'we are all in this together' noises, nice touch to mention god at the very end. There! Fauxpology accomplished.
I have to say the verbiage on this one is not as egregious as some, but still. Ugh.
