On Monday, reports indicated President Donald Trump plans to resume holding in-person rallies in two weeks.

Commenters on social media promptly buried him in scorn for his decision — many of them pointing out that the president is putting his supporters in jeopardy of COVID-19 infection.

There is certainly a part of me that reacts, "Good, let them all get sick and suffer the consequences of their stupid decisions" but those people aren't going to go to rallies, then quarantine themselves. They are going to go out to their jobs, to their relatives, to the grocery store, etc... They will spread the virus to people who are not Trump supporters and who have little idea that they are interacting with jerks who just packed into a rally for hate, likely were not wearing masks, and are likely not doing so right at that moment.

Trump does deserve scorn for putting his need for adoration ahead of people's health. Those people that would attend the rallies, are complete idiots, but the rest of us should not be collateral damage for his ego.

Trump could be using it as a bluff to try to break up the news cycle and send a message of confidence (while actually having no intention to go through with it). Or, as with the RNC, Trump could be trying to find a Dem Governor to "force" him not to hold the rally where he "wants" to hold it if only they'd let him. When the state says he has to follow guidelines, he'll complain they are trying to manipulate the election.

I don't think Trump's going to try to hold a rally in Florida at Mar-a-Lago, for example. DeSantis would just let him do it, and that wouldn't fit the plan. Also, that would mean a bunch of his beloved Trumpies spreading covid-19 and "hoi polloi cooties" on his property, and I don't think he likes them that way.
