How did racist scum like Chauvin, with some 17 demerits, get to be a training officer...

for rookie cops? That just shows the extreme rot in the Minneapolis Police Dept.

Guess he was training the rookies how to kill and make sure to maintain the choke until long after there's no pulse.

That's going to be a huge payoff to the Floyd family from the city budget.

all they want to do is protect every member, no matter what crimes they commit. Cops can't be trusted at this point to clean up anything wrong within their ranks. Sad. We have to face this truth, head on. Folks want police in their neighborhoods, they welcome them, they pay taxes for police to support safety in their communities. This trust is broken in minority neighborhoods. Patrols are mostly conducted by white cops that don't live in the community, don't know the people that live there. The cops drive around in cop cars, very removed from the people. We need police reform, it will help us and them, in the end.

Well stated, as always.

We will likely never know, but I am wondering whether those racist, hate-filled police are those who, perhaps joined the military because of a desire to maim & kill.

They should be debriefed & be required to fully engage in group therapy when returning from war zones, in my professional opinion.

apparently believed that 400 years of ongoing abuse, dehumanization, and systemic oppression represents a "good start". Who better to carry the tiki torch forward than someone with a record emphasizing the "proper credentials". The dark and long-standing side of police culture, hell-bent on maintaining the status quo, is not limited to Minneapolis by any means.

Quit looking at it from a basic human decency position.

I am from a union family. I married a union man. Unions have made a positive difference in my life in numerous ways.

However. (You knew that was coming)

I am unsure I can support police unions at this point. Citizen oversight groups and changes in structure between elected officials and police help, but unless cops are motivated to hold each other accountable on a daily basis, this is not likely to change.
