Living in Texas, I had never heard this story. Wow!
But in Kaufman, anything is possible.

Many of you have read and shared the posts about my friend Gabe Winzer, who was and still is, mostly a name unknown to those outside of his family and friends. I am asking that my friends and family #sayhisname and share his story, as his families case has finally, 7 years later, made it to the Supreme Court.
First, let me tell you about Gabe's life: He was a son. A brother. A friend. A graduate of the University of North Texas. He had just taken a highly sought after position as a Business Analyst. His laugh was unmistakable and incredibly infectious. Just now, I laughed under my breath a little, remembering it. He and I played on a recreational kickball team together. A little over 2 weeks before his murder he came to visit, fell asleep on my couch, and woke up in horror because during his nap, my cat had nestled into his lap and sweet Gabe was afraid of cats. When I hugged him goodbye that night, I didn't know it would be the last time.
A few weeks later, I attended his funeral. There were no seats left in the church. The aisles were filled with people standing shoulder to shoulder, the lobby was full, the front doors were propped open and people spilled out onto the sidewalk outside. One incredibly important person was missing that day: Gabe's father.
On April 27, 2013, I was excitedly texting a group of friends, Gabe included, about weekend plans. No one responded. I cracked a joke. Still no response, and then my friend Nicki called me. "Are you sitting down?" were the first words out of her mouth. I don't remember what she said next, but in the weeks (and now years) following, I would learn more and more about the murder of my kind, thoughtful, funny friend....at the hands of the Kaufman County, Texas Police Department.
Here are the facts:
On April 27, 2013, the Kaufman County Sheriffs Office received several reports of an armed man firing a pistol and destroying mailboxes. Callers described him as a black male wearing a brown shirt. The man fired at the first officers to arrive, but the officers did not initially return fire. The man then disappeared. As more officers arrived, they confirmed the shooter was wearing a brown shirt and they established a defensive position.
A few minutes later, #GabeWinzer who was wearing a blue jacket rode a bicycle within sight of the officers. By the way, "within sight" was between 90 and 150 yards away (further than a football field). Within six seconds, SIX SECONDS, of spotting Gabe, the officers opened fire. 29 rounds, to be exact. Despite being shot four times, Gabriel managed to flee to his backyard, where his father attempted to provide medical assistance to his dying son.
During the attempt to save his son, Gabe's father is handcuffed and tased, as was Gabe, despite having already been shot 4 times. He died as a result of the gunshot wounds.
An officer on the scene reported that Gabe's father bit him. No medical assistance was required on the scene and no bite marks were present. Despite that, Winzers teeth were deemed a "deadly weapon" and he was arrested.
Following his arrest, the state used three of their ten peremptory strikes to remove the only potential black jurors from the jury. He was convicted by an all white jury and spent years in prison.
It sounds made up. It isn't.
The Winzer family's case has finally reached the Supreme Court. 7 years later. Please, I beg of you, say his name on every platform and at every chance you have. The goal is to get Gabe Winzer's story on the official #BlackLivesMatter platform so his family & legal team can receive more attention & support. If you know someone involved, or have suggestions on how to accomplish this, please share. If you don't, please, still share. Spread his name and his story. Let's not allow the incredible atrocities that Gabe's family has suffered to go unpunished. There is power in numbers. Please help. Please share.

I imagine there are 1000s of these miscarriages of justice cases across the country. And never forget that EvilOrangeAnus wanted 5 innocent AA young men locked away even after the real rapist confessed to the crime. TRump has never acknowledged that he was wrong or apologized for his ads inflaming the case.
