I've watched 3 substantive interviews about this issue. PBS Newshour, CNN and Rachel. They talk about using community resources, social workers, etc., to deal with domestic violence, drug addiction, etc. But none of those interviews addressed rapes, muggings, robberies of late night stores. How does that work if the police are abolished?

(12,286 posts)Instead stop having police show up to deal with drug addicts and mental health emergencies.
Cops can deal with crimes and social services can deal with people in crises.
Its really not hard.
Really.

(3,433 posts)If they are planning to rebuild the police force it can be temporary, if not then they can do it that way.

(234 posts)It would be an assortment of community based solutions to these. To be sure, the standard police approach to all of these doesn't work. In Minneapolis, there are 1500 rape kits that have never been tested.
In the short term, some sort of force would be required to handle violent in-progress situations. In the long-term, the goal is providing economic resources, counseling and mental health, and an assortment of programs that would mitigate these. we know that when people have what they need to live their life, crime goes down.
Even violence- we know that its a cycle. If instead of putting young violent offenders into the criminal justice system where they will only continue to act in violent ways, we intervene and provide them the resources they need.
We don't know exactly what it looks like, but we've reached a point where the status quo is unacceptable.

(92,108 posts)The talking point should be reform
The slogan "defund the police" is just terrible marketing.

(234 posts)It's not an app. It's how we organize safety in our communities and its grown organically out of community organizations borne in neighborhoods that don't associate police and safety.

All I'm saying.
Its a hashtag with repercussions.
There are better ways to reform without abolishing it, which is what would happen if we truly Defunded the Police.
The Congressiolal Black Caucus & Dem leaders are already laying out a very consise & well thought out policy plan for reform, as we speak.
I'll tust them before a meme with no explanation..

Really a great story.
