...I'd provide a link, but aren't sure how... but I saw it at the CBS website. Regardless...it does sound right for 2020, doesn't it? We've had everything else, how about an alien intervention? Just one thing, guys...if you ask, "take us to your leader"...take him with you when you go, OK?

(64,852 posts)Oddly enough an inordinately high fraction of quasars and magnetars spin on the same axis, everywhere.
There are a few plausible theories as to why, including those that don't require an isotopic universe.
But, it seems possible that some quas/magnet-ars might spin on shifting axes.
If so, the jet would only point to one specific spot once in a while.
But, because they spin so fast, they will exhaust the possible angles and repeat with some periodicity.
I'm not positing a theory here.
Just applying some cosmological knowns and then adding a little probability.

(64,852 posts)However, if it was a radio signal from a distant planet, it's possible that 157 days here might be a solar year there.
I say this mostly in jest because the ancient astronaut folks will be jumping on this signal in a hurry.
The 157 day solar year will be their "evidence". The other proof of their theories will be that the signal can't be hitting earth by random chance. Despite the fact that it can!

(31,261 posts)There is something different about a signal that turn on and off, like you pointed out, some type of periodicity about it. The problem is determining it's approach direction, for something that is deep in space and not light, I am not sure that we have instruments that are sophisticated enough to determine a possible origin.
Space theory is contentious here. People make a claim that something is an accepted theory, but if you look it up, there are several theories mentioned as possibilities. One of the things that really isn't settled is how our moon formed, there are at least three theories, but some claim that only one is accepted. Even the origin of our solar system has something like four theories explaining it. My training as an engineer causes me to look for evidence that support a theory to at least 90% confidence, when that is done to a lot of the space theories being thrown around as near ironclad fact I find them full of holes and no where near a confidence level where I can accept them as certain.

(64,852 posts)I was just joking around about the "aliens have been here forever" crowd.
As someone who did conformational chemistry both academically & professionally I know what you're saying.
The exact quantum mechanism of orbital diffusion and electron sharing/transfer is in dispute and has been for 50 years.
The differences are somewhat small between the competing theories, but different they are.
Of the 4 commonly accepted ideas, 2 of them differ only in the transfer rate, meaning how long a given hypercharge (or hyperdeficiency) state can exist. I actually can live with all 4, because they all meet your 90% rule. But, I prefer one out of the four.
