My dad was a cop in a small town in northern lower Michigan for 30 years and he would be absolutely horrified by what so many police departments have devolved into. He was never well-liked by the town officials because he was the cop who drove a poor kid home who had been drinking and giving him a warning but would bust the spoiled rich kid of our town's highest-priced attorney, much to the displeasure of the mucky-mucks. Needless to say, he was never promoted but, as he would tell me later, at least he could sleep at night.
