China has removed pangolin parts from its official list of traditional medicines, state media reported Tuesday, days after increasing legal protections on the endangered animal.
Pangolins were left out of the official Chinese Pharmacopoeia this year, along with substances including a pill formulated with bat feces, the state-owned Health Times reported.
The pangolin, the worlds most heavily trafficked mammal, is thought by some scientists to be the possible host of the novel coronavirus that emerged at a market in Chinas Wuhan city last year.
Its body parts fetch a high price on the black market as they are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, although scientists say they have no therapeutic value.

(4,545 posts)Now, if they would just remove all the other endangered animal parts (and plants) from their "official list" (quack medicine list IOWs), the world would be a lot better off.

(46,301 posts)Oh yeah.
Back when Mao had absolute power, he was bothered by how "Western" medicine was making such leaps and bounds.
So he began a propaganda program, saying how "superior" what he called "traditional medicine" was compared to "Western" medicine.
The problem was, with so many people in so many areas, just about anything and everything was touted as "traditional."
And to this day, people in China still use worthless "remedies," like rhino horn instead of Viagra.
