Springfield Police officer arrested for excessive force

The incident was brought under review by Springfield Police Chief Barry Roberts, who decided to have a third agency, in this case the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, handle the investigation.

A white Springfield police officer was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly using excessive force when shocking a black man with a stun gun.

Officer Ronnie Nelson was booked into Bay County Jail on a felony charge of official misconduct and misdemeanor charge of battery. The incident was brought under review by Springfield Police Chief Barry Roberts, who decided to have a third agency, in this case the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, handle the investigation.

According to reports, Nelson, accompanied by a recruit officer, were patrolling Highway 98 shortly after midnight on May 29 and approached the victim, Solomon Smith. Smith was walking down the sidewalk at the time and questioned the officers as to why he was being stopped.

According to Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford, Smith provided all the necessary information; name, date of birth, and Social Security number. The recruit officer ran the information, but misheard Smith’s name and asked why he gave a false name.
