Listening to Volume on Sirius XM, I hear a commercial for another of these home title theft rip offs.
Guess who is the "spokesman".
O'Reilly!
Big shot, pompous ass with an international megaphone is now shilling for a product to protect people from a crime that barely ever occurs!
Tiny violins!

(6,913 posts)It is nice to see OReilly taken down a few pegs.
Guess I mis-read title. Getting older.

Money magazine & Smart Business Network both had articles about it.
One can't really lose their home. One might need to sue a tertiary lender to dismiss a loan taken against a forged title.
But, it's extremely rare, and the risk is super low.

(16,616 posts)FWIW, if you have Lifelock, they throw in home title theft protection for free. I tried to research this "crime" to see if it actually exists and only found two articles, and in both of them the "expert" talking about it was the (former) spokesperson for Home Title Lock, a retired law enforcement officer they dug up to represent the product. I don't think this crime is "an epidemic."

(64,963 posts)And, per the SBN article, the original homeowner almost never pays more than a moderate legal fee to void the illegal loan.
Like getting the buyer protection plan on a $39 DVD player.

(64,963 posts)There are multiple articles available and they all say it's unnecessary.
I didn't find any where the author went to the word "scam" but most were clearly recommendations to avoid them.
I never pursue this sort of warranty thing.
Like the appliance/household warranty products. The actuaries have very precisely calculated the premiums to avoid loss, almost no matter what. They're sucker bets.
They are basically a negative interest bank account.

Despicable.
