(9,983 posts)One of Richard's good friends was Wendell Scott, the only Black man to ever win a top tier NASCAR race. Wendell was his own man, and a superb mechanic, as well as a respected competitor. Richard is famously frugal, and used to "rib" his friend "How cum we spend all this money, and you run so good?"
Wendell put his kids through college "Out of Daddy's wallet!" He rarely had a crew in the early days, would pit the car himself if that's what it took. #34 epitomized "How Bad Do You Want It?"

(66,328 posts)But will this bring in new fans who have been repelled by NASCAR's hillbilly background?
Mopar151
(9,983 posts)They're the same tiresome asses who said Wendell Scott got into the Hall of Fame because of color. They are proud of their fake "Southern Heritage", won't hear a word of the real history. Many of the crewmen, and "behind the scenes" people, are from the Northeast - education and work ethic, from a manufacturing culture, put them several places ahead in the line!

(11,915 posts)It isn't being displayed by anyone working for or with NASCAR, but by individual fans camping in the infield.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,367 posts)I do not get the impression it is as extensive as you might think.
The vast majority of camping (generally with RV's, as opposed to tents, but tents still appear) is done outside the racetrack.
If you think about it, there are only handful of tracks large enough to offer room for very many RV's inside, but most of them have plenty of parking space outside. There are only 6 active, large, 2.5 (and above) mile ovals; Daytona, Talledega, Michigan Indianapolis, Pocono and California (Fontana). A handful of 2 mile tracks that have room inside; Atlanta, Charlotte, Darlington, Kansas, Kentucky and Texas, but it seems to me that most tracks restrict the number of large RV's inside, so that the view is not obstructed from the stands. Not to mention the tracks want people in the seats, a opposed to sitting in a lawn chair on top of their Winnebago.
At least this is my impression from the races I attended as a participant years ago.
I could be way off base, and I'm happy to be shown evidence that infield camping is still the thing it was in the 90's and earlier.
MichMan
(11,915 posts)Many have 2 races per season, so that is over half of the entire schedule. Camping in the infield is a very big deal & infield campers have zero interest in sitting in the grandstands.
The track not only gets the ticket money for each event, but also a camping fee for the weekend. Infield campers are paying more $$$ than those sitting in the stands.
FYI, I have been to well over 100 races.
Your track lengths are off slightly.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,367 posts)I worked in the industry for 12 years, and have worked as a participant at every one of the tracks I mentioned except Talledega. I've done displays and worked as a team member at well over 200 events at almost every major racing venue in the United States, one in Australia and 3 in Canada which included Super Speedways (six consecutive Indy 500's), Mid-sized ovals, one mile and half mile facilities, dirt tracks, temporary street courses, permanent, natural terrain road courses and drag strips.
So I'm not exactly a neophyte, but I'll defer to your knowledge.
MichMan
(11,915 posts)It isnt very widespread, but there are idiots everywhere you go.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,367 posts)telling them to take it down or have their ticket revoked, the message will get around pretty quick.
For NASCAR it is all about the image and appearance and what is seen on TV, so inside the oval, I can see it happening.
Outside? Not so much.
But after all, these tracks are all private property, so they have the right to enforce almost any rule they care to in this regard.
One thing is for sure; A shitload of butthurt nitwits will declare they will never watch or go to another race.
Then they'll go home and watch them on TV.

(24,367 posts)Disney has a dress code at their parks. They won't let you through the gates of the Magic Kingdom if you are wearing something on their naughty list.
But I agree with the general point you are making. It will be difficult to enforce completely, to be sure.
If I'm not mistaken, they started down this path a few years back, by prohibiting race teams and tracks from displaying that flag, right? Or am I remembering it wrong?
MichMan
(11,915 posts)Disney can control it since people are entering in defined turnstiles. Much different than people driving campers in for four days.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,367 posts)and make it a provision of your accepting the ticket that you agree to abide by them, the same way every race track ticket has a personal injury indemnity clause. If a tire flies off a racecar and hits you in the forehead, you can't sue.
They can say....
No nudity, for instance.
No liquor, no Styrofoam containers, no coolers over so many inches, etc. etc.
Again, it will be interesting to see how they go about enforcing such a ban, and how far the tracks are willing to go.
The only people who will really have a problem with it are the fucking racist, historically illiterate dipshits anyway.
Elwood P Dowd
(11,443 posts)At some tracks you never even see one. They run about 35 races a season, and they're not all in the south. California, Arizona, Delaware, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kansas, New York, Nevada, Illinois are a few of the non-confederate states that host NASCAR events.

so it looks like nascar is caving. if this is widespread, I promise I will quit watching. I wrote off the NFL 3 years ago. I watched nascar because the people there are the last that still love our country. This is a huge mistake, nascar is opening the door to this. We need team owners to come out and say, as richard childress said, we expect you to stand proud during the anthem. TRL this is a big deal to our sport, deleting my comments doesn't help this board be more relevant. and it will not change the events unfolding before us. If there is no controversy in anything people don't get passionate about anything https://sports.yahoo.com/nascar-allow-peaceful-protests-during-193527593.html

Those are the only two responses I see so far, but I'm positive there will be more.
EDIT: Just since I posted this, other forum members are coming down hard on "Hidesert Cowboy". He might get banned.

(17,912 posts)They "love" our country by flying the flag of a rebellious section that wanted to start their own country because they didn't like the country these people supposedly love? I'm sorry, but exactly how does that work?

(5,722 posts)If all one knows about the Civil War is what one gets from watching The Outlaw Josey Wales, all that "white man's grievance" bullshit seems real. The Confederacy is "the Rebellion" and the Union is "the Empire."
When I was in high school (mid-central Flaw'duh, 1978) a student was allowed to bring a KKK flyer to our Social Studies class and pass it around. It was the only time I ever saw one, but it stuck with me; the combination of fearmongering and tough-guy rhetoric would be immediately recognizable in the rise of Rush Limpballs and FOXHenhouse.

(26,044 posts)...the "Race America - Consortium of Independent Stock-car Teams" or something like that, and try to drive "cowardly" NASCAR out of business? They might get a lot of (far-)right-thinking drivers and crews to jump ship, and I'm sure a lot of the clientele would be delighted to have a "safe space" where they can practice "freeze peach!!!"
