Love how he widens his eyes as he gets closer, something else that I've seen from the dummies here!

(8,544 posts)Anyone who thought NASCAR was only talking about it has had 5 years to learn otherwise. NASCAR is not owned by those who can't imagine a stock car race without the rebel past plastered over it. Among other things it is a multi-billion dollar international sports brand and sponsors events in a wide variety of locations and countries where that flag is considered hate speech and is illegal to display.
There is much more than PR involved in this change though. A number of current and former drivers have spoken out over the years and the makeup of the racing industry has changed as well. And then there is the fact that NASCAR sees itself as in the family entertainment business and caters to all kinds of families as fans and participants.

The Confederate flag is offensive, ugly and racist. It's the symbol of traitors and losers. Why would anyone fly it?

(8,544 posts)We were taught that it represents all that and more.
"They" were taught a different history and meaning for that flag, and those who flew it. It's a bit like religion in that you learn as a child the beliefs and traditions of your family or tribe or community. Until those are challenged by an experience that calls them into question you will assume them to be true.
We have reached such a moment of truth for our country.

(5,917 posts)and that is assuming the ban on the battle flag is enforced.
Banning a symbol or object is not very effective as long as the spirit behind it remains.
