Ohio Republican asks if COVID-19 numbers are possible because the 'colored population' just doesn't

wash their hands

“My point is I understand African Americans have a higher incidence of chronic conditions and it makes them more susceptible to death from COVID,” said state Sen. Steve Huffman, R-Tipp City, who is also an emergency room physician. “But why it doesn’t make them more susceptible to just get COVID. Could it just be that African Americans or the colored population do not wash their hands as well as other groups or wear a mask or do not socially distance themselves? That could be the explanation of the higher incidence?”

“He highlights what racism is from a systematic perspective. He’s a full legislator but beyond that, professionally, he’s a doctor. When we talk about the health disparities that happen because black folks aren’t believed when they’re actually hurt, they aren’t given the treatment that they need. Do you think that someone who acknowledges the ‘coloreds’ is going to give the love and care that people need when they come through those doors?” said Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President Stephanie Howse.

Can people actually be so racist that even though they are a doctor they can ignore the science to blame it on the victim?!?! What the actual fuck.... I mean where does he live in his head? 1955 were calling black people coloured was dandy and implying black people where somehow dirtier than other communities was practically compulsory. RIDICULOUS. And I am very sure that as people point out his racism he will turn himself into the victim. You know how they do it so well. 'I am not racist - you are racist for pointing out my racism but IF I offended anyone I did not mean to. Now time to move on.' They have been pulling that shit off since they were told that cannot discriminate against black people - not like they listened - but I don't think it will wash anymore. Generation Z is not marching like it is 1950, they are marching like it is 2020 - this is their time and old racist fools like him either need to get with the 2020 programme or slink off and munter in the corner, where he can do no more harm, while continuing to think 1950 is the place to be. Heh

less strongly than whites do

That implies they don't think they need to be as careful when treating blacks or give them as strong or as much pain medicine

Have not seen if med schools have training programs to eliminate these attitudes

and persons from other age-tagged groups do do some deep introspection and do own their own early dysfunctional learned behaviors. By now, it truly is a choice not too realize what damage has been perpetrated by the racist environment ensconced in one's child brain. One cannot simply forget that environment but can learn and choose never again to exhibit it in word or deed or participate in it because the other discriminations and injustices against whole groups flows from this one, the self-righteous arbiters of tyranny! The point is always that as adults one chooses to overcome it, to realize there is still systemic harm being done, and structural changes that need to take place to end that hate out of our worst selves in the mirror that refuses to quell it as they brandish stereotyping about race, age, gender, religion, marital status, economic status, disabilities - mental and physical, without concern upon each other for each of our stories is different and unique to who we become. Neither war nor legislation seems to have removed the rawness of many injustices that even our Founding Fathers just did not see coming from their hopeful words to encourage a Union of States and territories across a continent and perhaps by careful consideration upon request, beyond -- and did they gather to form a new nation or just sign their names to those encouraging words of the Preamble. later a Bill of Rights as a ploy to raise an Army of Revolutionists ticked at a tyrant!

Huffman isn't my state senator, but mine is a Republican too.

I hope there will finally be a blue wave in 2020, at all levels of governance.

* Gerrymandering by Republicans doesn't help. They're constantly trying to rig elections in their favor.

... that warned African Americans to leave before dark.

That's the hometown of Huffman.

The sign was a rumor that I'd heard in the past, so I looked for it online and found a recent reference to it. The article is a little encouraging, at least, since it was about a prayer vigil for George Floyd.

https://www.tdn-net.com/news/84171/tipp-city-hosts-prayer-vigil

Following the guest speakers, Elise Cooper also read a special letter she wrote to Tipp City Council, asking for a resolution declaring Tipp City an anti-racist community. “Tipp City has never felt like a place that is diverse and open to equality,” Cooper said. “We have gained a reputation around the Dayton area as that little white town; our colorful history of racism doesn’t help that. Up until the late 1970s, we were known as a ‘sundown’ town.”

Tipp City’s high school did not have its first African American graduate until the late 90s, Cooper said, “and still, more than 20 years later our graduating classes are hardly diverse.”

“Tipp City does not have to live up to the reputation that others have built around us,” she said. “It is our hope that the city council will consider passing a resolution declaring Tipp City as an anti-racist community, in which all persons are treated equally, justly and respectfully regardless of race, ethnicity or place of origin.”

but when one actually sees the doctor their health concerns can be dismissed based on the doctor's prejudice .

A black woman that tried to get tested for covid 19 was refused a test and she ended up dying from it.

Poor sanitation may or may not be an issue in any sector of any population, black or white, rich or poor. What are you doing to help with that, Doc?

As a doctor, he should be ashamed of openly criticizing any human sector rather than being part of the solution.

As a Republican, he's a hypocrite because they've done more to increase human inequality and injustice than any other political group on the planet.

Which is it? Medicine is a calling, you need to heal and treat people. In most cases.

Who leaves medicine to be a Republican politician? You can’t be both a healer and a Republican.

19. AS WE AGE......
Thu Jun 11, 2020, 08:53 AM
Jun 2020

We deteriorate. By the time most Americans reach the age of 55, they suffer from at least one chronic illness. We are a nation hooked on fast foods and our grocery shelves are packed with processed foods that are more HARMFUL than nutritious for us. Foods loaded with fat, salt and sugar. We feed these to our kids and kids now develop chronic illnesses at an earlier age. Our health insurance is so expensive because chronic illness is SKYROCKETING in this country....a pandemic itself. We IGNORE this because its a SLOW KILLER. Up until the ACA was past, promoting healthy life styles as a means to stop chronic illness was largely ignored. The main focus by the health community was to treat chronic illness, not try to PREVENT IT. If our Black citizens suffer from a larger proportion of chronic illness it is due primarily to their economic condition....poverty. Those who live in poverty can't afford health insurance, can't afford more nutritious expensive foods and have substandard school systems. Is health and nutrition even taught in these schools? Maybe, maybe not. So the health conditions of Black citizens is just another indicator of the inequality they suffer. ACA and health insurance companies now focus heavily on preventive measure. More yearly exams and screenings for health problems, programs to help with nutrition/diabetes control and cease smoking. Even gym memberships. In states where ACA was adopted, the cancer rates in those states are dropping! But back to this posting, our black citizens are suffering from this pandemic due to inequality and lack of access to adequate medical treatment. First Senator Moron blames black citizens for having chronic illness in the first place, then suggests with no evidence what so ever, that it might be to carelessness on their part. What about the other victims who have died! Were they careless. Must have been if you believe Senator Moron!

because of his promises on manufacturing...they were lied to of course. Many won't vote for him again. He also attacked the union and his steel policies caused Lordstown to shut down early...Trump also attacked the union. It would not surprise me if Trump loses Ohio. There are layoff scoming to the big three if demand does not increase which is unlikely. This will seal Trumps fate in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.
