"6 Things White People Say That Highlight Their Privilege"

1. “It’s not my job to fix racism because I’m not racist.”

2. “I don’t see color.”

3. “There’s no need to worry about the police if you’re not doing anything illegal.”

4. “I don’t want to post about racism on social media because I’m scared of the backlash.”

5. “I don’t have white privilege.”

6. “I’m not sure when I should start talking to my kids about racism.”

Even sadder is that the ones who most need to go to the link are the least likely to do so ...

work to change themselves.

We have a lot of learning and changing to do as a society, and no one should be shamed about not knowing something and making a commitment to change.

The argument that "I don't believe in race so there can't be racism" must be especially infuriating to people who are being oppressed while smug white people walk around feeling superior because they "don't see color."

After 911 I was afraid to complain about a racists and islamaphobic email. I went to my manager, but I was afraid of the consequences. It's shameful, and not living up to my values, but I admit I was afraid.

by the internal pressure to conform. It's just the way us hunter/gatherers are with our fancy opposable thumbs and stuff. Slightly more evolved than dog packs, maybe.

Our conclusions are always based on the information we deem acceptable. "I judge that I am of sound mind. Now to convince the others and I'll be king." History is the recorded exploits of such clear thinkers. Consensual conclusions are super-powers.

There ARE consequences for non-conformity. The consensual conclusion that we can tolerate non-conformity without negative consequences is the heart of the US experiment. At least it is for some.

Faulty system, I'd say.
