They have felt like they were in charge of everything (and they have been) for ever. They see the demographics of this country changing (same in many European countries) and they fear that they will not control all the levers of power for eternity. We outnumber them. By a lot. So they are kicking and screaming to hold on to a vision of the past that really doesn't exist except in their fevered dreams and on Fox News.

And those who support them - who dwell near the bottom of the economic ladder - believe that as long as they are better off than just one other person (preferably a black person) then they are golden. They vote against their own best interests every time because their right wing media echo chamber convinces them otherwise.

Plus the cruelty. They like that.
